The FLYRA state meet scores four team races. Here are the top 10 middle school boys' and girls' teams in each: Ruckel and Emerald Coast lead Public, Ransom Everglades and Oak Hall lead Private, The Villages Charter and Cornerstone Classical lead Charter, and No Excuses leads both club lists.
Florida middle school cross country team rankings by division, season through October 6, 2026
No Excuses RC's girls are the clearest No. 1 on any of these lists, 26 points ahead of the Boca Warriors in the club race. The boys' side is a coin flip: No Excuses and NEXT are a point apart in the club race and have not met. Ruckel leads the public school boys after one race, a Nights of Thunder win over Tavares that still stands, Emerald Coast leads the public school girls, Ransom Everglades and The Villages Charter lead the private and charter boys, and Cornerstone Classical leads the charter girls again.
The FLYRA state meet in November scores four team races: public school, private school, charter school and club. These are the top 10 in each, boys and girls, eighty teams in all. Each list is its own virtual race: every team's top seven, scored like a cross country meet against the other teams in that division only, so points on one list are not comparable to points on another.
The private school girls' list is led by two teams that have not run a middle school race. Oak Hall and All Saints' run their middle schoolers on the high school varsity, and the FLYRA meet is open to those kids in November. Their 5ks are on these lists the same way they were on our individual top fives by division. Whether those schools bring a middle school team to state is their call; every entry built that way says so.
About the times: each runner is listed with the time they actually ran, and the number in parentheses is what that run projects to at the state meet. For a 5k, it is the 3K we project from it. A runner who has not raced this fall shows last November's state time. The projections set the order, and when two teams have met with their full lineups, the most recent finish decides.
Boys Public School Top 10
1. Ruckel Middle School - 97 points
Liam Jopling (8th) 10:25.0 (10:16.0); Cael Rusmisel (8th) 10:37.3 (10:28.3); Tyler Wade (6th) 11:00.8 (10:51.8); Benson Porter (8th) 11:03.6 (10:54.6); Jackson Porter (8th) 11:14.7 (11:05.7). Then Gavin Gheen (7th) 11:20.2 at 2025 state, Braxton Carter (8th) 11:43.4 (11:34.3).
One race, and it was a statement: Liam Jopling and Cael Rusmisel first and second at Nights of Thunder on Sept. 12, 24 points, 11 ahead of Tavares in a field of 205. Ruckel has not raced since, and Tavares has not beaten them, so Ruckel is first. On paper Tavares is two points better; that is our call, and the next time they meet, the finish settles it. Gavin Gheen, the sixth man, is in on last November's state time.
2. Tavares Middle School - 95 points
Jack Ilea (6th) 11:07.9 (10:30.1); Gabriel Garback (7th) 11:17.1 (10:39.3); Joel Cordero (8th) 11:29.6 (10:51.8); Alexis Hernandez (7th) 11:30.0 (10:52.2); Alejandro Hernandez (8th) 11:32.0 (11:00.2). Then Jeremiah William 11:32.6 (11:37.9), Dustin Albert (8th) 12:00.9 (11:44.6).
Eight wins in thirteen team races this fall, racing as Tavares or as Red Sea Running Club, which is the same program. Every loss came to a team on another division's list except one: Ruckel at Nights of Thunder, 24 to 35. Jack Ilea, a sixth grader, leads a five that is 30 seconds from first to fifth, and two points on paper separate these two teams.
3. Montford Middle School - 213 points
Landon Heitmeyer (7th) 11:04.6 (10:45.0); Warren Campbell (7th) 11:23.6 (11:03.9); Wilder Liebenhaut (8th) 11:07.8 (11:08.9); Levi Renn (7th) 11:12.6 (11:13.7); Isaiah Therrien (7th) 11:21.1 (11:22.2). Then Grayson Berry (8th) 11:53.1 (11:33.4), Breaen Shriver (7th) 11:39.8 (11:40.9).
Four Leon County meets against Deerlake this fall, wins in the last three, the latest the Buck Run championship on Sept. 30, 23 to 46. Four seventh graders in the five, led by Landon Heitmeyer.
4. Deerlake Middle School - 240 points
Kaleb Jacobs (8th) 11:09.4 (10:49.8); Alexander Grimes (7th) 11:10.3 (10:50.7); Beckett Ribolzi (8th) 11:11.6 (10:52.0); Noah Edwards (8th) 11:20.0 (11:21.1); Declan Ashton (8th) 11:53.8 (11:44.4). Then Pierce Grant (6th) 11:43.7 (11:44.8), Asher Evans (7th) 12:09.6 (11:50.0).
Beat Montford at the Wolves Run in August, 28 to 32, and has been second to them three times since. Kaleb Jacobs, Alexander Grimes and Beckett Ribolzi finished inside three seconds of each other that August day.
5. Destin Middle School - 287 points
Eli Finkler (8th) 12:23.1 for two miles (11:03.6); Jack Zurick (6th) 12:28.8 for two miles (11:08.9); Cade Yahne (6th) 12:33.9 for two miles (11:13.6); Merric Lacour (8th) 12:44.3 for two miles (11:23.3); John Otto (7th) 12:53.9 for two miles (11:32.2). Three Broward conference wins at Markham Park. Lucca Wiseman's 10:43.3 there on Sept. 16 projects as the fastest run by any boy on this list. The gap after the top two is what keeps Pioneer here.
7. Landrum Middle School - 519 points
Alexander Chen (8th) 10:58.0 (10:59.1); Maxim Ewer (8th) 11:44.5 (11:42.9); David Koehrsen (7th) 11:44.3 (11:45.4); Evan Kul (7th) 11:47.9 (11:46.3); Bennett Laaser (7th) 11:48.8 (11:47.3). Then William Robinson (7th) 12:11.0 (12:12.1), Caleb Beasley (7th) 12:16.9 (12:15.3).
Won the Craig Speziale middle school race on Oct. 3 with 75 points, 41 ahead of Landon, and beat Landon by one point at Bale N Trail the week before. Landon's five project faster; two wins put Landrum directly above them until Landon turns it around.

Second to Liza Jackson, a charter, over two miles at Pineview on Sept. 23. Levi Williams, a sixth grader, leads, and Houston Holloway is in on last November's state time.

Third of 29 teams in the Friday race at flrunners, second at Seffner Christian and at North Port. Ausom Torres and Gonzalo Lucatero ran together at Jim Ryun and still lead.

3. Calvary Christian Academy (Fort Lauderdale) - 199 points

Exactly five. Elliot Macki and Holden Byrd ran the Jim Ryun middle school race, where Calvary was fifth; Daniel Hage won the JV 5k at Dr. Garcia, and Judah Daniel and Ian Bryce race high school 5ks. No sixth runner, so one missing kid ends the team score.

Liam Piper races both levels and his varsity 5k at Fort Myers projects as the best mark on any team on this list. Second to HEAT at Spanish River and third at AVE. The Roc race at flrunners, where SWFC was seventh, came without most of the 5k runners, so it does not count against them.

How we ranked them
- Florida middle schoolers only, grades 6 through 8, every middle school race in the results database through October 6. Two-mile races and the 3.2K at Alexander are converted to 3K first. Fifth graders, including ungraded kids who also run elementary races, are on the elementary lists only.
- Middle schoolers who race high school 5ks are in, the way they were on our individual top fives: each 5k is leveled for its course, then turned into a 3K figure from the middle schoolers who have raced both distances this fall. A kid with both keeps the better one. That bridge is the least certain step here, and a team built entirely on it has not raced as a middle school team.
- Each course gets a reading from the kids who ran it this fall and ran the state meet last November; small samples are pulled toward the statewide average. The Oak Park meet, the Todd Howsare middle school race and the third Volusia County meet count for finishing order only.
- A runner scores once, for the team they have raced for most this fall. A club is Club; a school is its division; a program's own division at last year's state meet stands where it raced one. Red Sea Running Club is Tavares Middle School. A kid seen only at last November's state meet is seeded on that time, for that team.
- Team order: a virtual race inside each division, five score and six and seven push. Then a team that beat a higher-ranked team in their most recent meeting moves directly above it, and that stands until they meet again. Meetings from September 12 and earlier no longer bind, except Ruckel over Tavares, which we kept, and a loss by a team missing two or more of its top five is not held against it.
- Spellings: a kid who shows up under two spellings on one team is one runner.
Every result behind these lists is in the Florida XC results database. The individual lists: middle school top fives by division. The statewide team top fives: week 6 middle school and elementary team rankings.
