Florida Cross Country Meet Schedule 2026

What is a cross country meet?

A cross country meet is a competition where teams and individual runners race over an outdoor course, usually about 5 kilometers for high school varsity. Teams score by adding the finishing places of their top five runners, and the lowest total score wins the team title.

Florida meets come in a few shapes. Invitationals bring a dozen to a hundred schools to one course on a Saturday morning. Dual and tri meets pit two or three schools against each other, often on a weekday afternoon. County and conference championships come in October, and the FHSAA series of district, region and state meets closes the season in November.

How Cross Country Meets Are Scored

Each team can run up to seven athletes in a varsity race. Only the first five finishers from each team score, and each runner scores the place they finish in. Add those five places and you have the team score. Lowest score wins, so a perfect score is 15 (places one through five).

• Only full teams count. A school needs at least five finishers to get a team score. Runners from incomplete teams still earn individual places, but they are taken out when places are counted for team scoring.
• Sixth and seventh runners displace. They do not add to their own team's score, but they take places away from other teams' scorers. A strong sixth runner can push a rival's fifth runner back several spots.
• Ties go to the sixth runner. Under the national high school rules the FHSAA follows, a tied team score is broken by comparing each team's sixth finisher. If only one team has a sixth runner, that team wins the tie. At the 2025 state meet, Providence won the 1A girls title 132 to 132 on its sixth runner.

Typical Race Distances and Course Types

Florida high school races are 5,000 meters (3.1 miles) for both varsity and JV. Middle school races are usually 3,000 meters, with some meets running two miles. Elementary races are usually one mile or 2,000 meters. Across the 240 meets in our database, almost every high school race is a 5K and most middle school races are 3Ks.

Florida courses are flatter than most of the country, but they are not all the same. Most run on grass through parks, horse farms and school campuses, and some add sand, roots, trails or tight turns. The state meet course at Apalachee Regional Park in Tallahassee and big invitational sites like the Florida Horse Park in Ocala have their own guides. Rain can leave standing water on any course, so times are not always comparable from one week to the next.

What to Bring and Expect on Meet Day

For runners

• Spikes or flats. Short cross country spikes grip on grass and sand. Check the meet info first: some hosts limit spike length, and courses with pavement sections favor flats.
• Water and a cooler. Early-season Florida meets start hot and humid even at 7:30 a.m. Drink before you get thirsty.
• Warm-up time. Plan on a 15 to 20 minute jog plus strides, and be at the start line when your race is called. Most meets do not wait.
• Dry clothes and shoes. Wet grass and mud are common. Bring a change for the ride home.

For parents and fans

• Arrive early. Parking at big invitationals fills up, and some hosts charge for it.
• Bring a chair, shade and bug spray. Team tents line the start area. Most courses have no bleachers.
• Move to see more. Spectators can usually catch runners at the start, at one or two loops, and at the finish chute. Stay off the marked course.
• Find results fast. Most meets post live results from the timing company, and full results land in our Florida cross country results database soon after.

Florida Championship Path

The FHSAA state series runs in three rounds, split by classification (1A, 2A, 3A and 4A). Teams and individuals race their district meet first. The top teams and individuals there move on to the region meet, and the top finishers at regions qualify for the state championship at Apalachee Regional Park in Tallahassee. Coaches enter their teams. There is no open entry.

In 2026, district meets run November 2 to 7, region meets run November 11 to 14, and the state championships for all four classes are on Friday, November 20, according to the FHSAA. Every district and region meet is in the calendar above.

Middle school and elementary runners have their own season-ending meets, run by county athletic associations, private-school conferences and the Florida Youth Runners Association (FLYRA). The 2026 FLYRA middle school state meet is October 30 and 31 at Holloway Park in Lakeland, and its qualifiers are in the calendar above.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a cross country meet last?

An invitational with several races usually fills a whole morning, while a dual meet can be over in about an hour. Each race lasts 10 to 30 minutes depending on the distance. Your runner is only on the course for one race, so check the meet schedule and plan to arrive at least an hour before their start.

Do parents need to register for a cross country meet?

No. Coaches enter their athletes, and spectators just show up. Some hosts charge an admission or parking fee, so check the meet information page before you go. Open races and community meets are the exception: runners without a school team sign up themselves, usually online.

How far is a high school cross country race in Florida?

High school varsity and JV races are 5,000 meters, a little over 3.1 miles. Middle school races are usually 3,000 meters or two miles, and elementary races are often one mile or 2,000 meters.

When is the 2026 Florida high school state cross country meet?

The 2026 FHSAA state championships are Friday, November 20, at Apalachee Regional Park in Tallahassee, with all four classes racing that day. Runners qualify through district meets on November 2 to 7 and region meets on November 11 to 14.
