Belen went 1-2-3 at the Southern Showcase, Marcelo Mantecon in 14:41.6, and Jack Michalak moves to third on a call over Isaiah Howdeshell; Jonathan Kiros climbs to fifth on the head-to-head rule and Reed Hagen, second at North Port, is first out.
Florida Class 3A boys cross country through five weeks: August 21-September 19, 2026
Belen Jesuit went to Huntsville and took the first three places in the Southern Showcase championship race, 250 boys deep. Marcelo Mantecon, a senior, won in 14:41.6, Armando Cruz, another senior, was second in 14:58.6 and Jack Michalak third in 15:01.7, and the team scored 57. Mantecon and Cruz stay where they were. Michalak, a junior who was outside the ten a week ago, goes to third, and that is a call rather than the rule: Isaiah Howdeshell of Largo, a senior, beat him at Cecil Field in August, third to seventh, and Luke Ross of Ponte Vedra and Kevin Aguilar of Mater Lakes, both seniors, finished ahead of him at the Horse Park. None of the three has met him since, and the rule alone would keep him behind all of them. The statewide list makes the same call, Michalak fifth and Howdeshell sixth, and it expires the day they share a start line.
Jonathan Kiros of Chiles, a senior, goes from tenth to fifth, and that one is the rule. He was nineteenth in Huntsville in 15:36.5; he beat Reed Hagen at Cecil Field in August and Ross, Aguilar and Liam Ilea of Tavares, a junior, at the Horse Park, and the only 3A boys who have beaten him all year are the three from Belen and Howdeshell. A loss stands until the two runners meet again, whatever either has run elsewhere since; where results loop, the most recent meeting decides, and a newer chain of results outranks an older direct one.
That same rule is why Hagen, a Fort Myers sophomore who was fourth a week ago, is first out. He was second to Luis Rivera of St. Cloud 4A at the North Port Invite in 15:30.3, on a course that read about 44 seconds fast, so the run levels to about 16:14. Kiros, Aguilar and Brody Johnson of Rockledge, a senior, all beat him at Cecil Field in August and none has met him since; Ross beat Aguilar at the Horse Park and Gabriel Harris of Lake Wales, a senior, beat Ross at Katie Caples, so the whole chain sits above him. A loss stands until they meet again, and he has three of them from August. Four names come in: Michalak, Aguilar, Ilea and Johnson. This is data and judgment, and we will miss somebody.
A runner is ranked on his whole season, with the most recent race counting most, and a race he won never counts against him. As always, this is data plus judgment, and we will miss somebody along the way. A (P) next to a name means that runner has not opened yet and we are going on last November. How we sorted everybody out is at the bottom. Races are not won until the kids have run. Enjoy.

1. Marcelo Mantecon, Belen Jesuit, Sr.
Won the Southern Showcase championship race in 14:41.6, 17 seconds clear of his teammate Cruz in a field of 250, worth about 15:07 at Cecil Field. Two weeks earlier he won the Horse Park out of 549 in 15:22.1, and that win is not held against him. Two races, two wins, both over Cruz, the second by 17 seconds. Nobody outside his own team has finished within 20 seconds of him this fall, and he will see his teammates and Howdeshell again in November.
2. Armando Cruz, Belen Jesuit, Sr.
Second in Huntsville in 14:58.6, the second time this fall he has finished a race with only Mantecon in front of him. He won Cecil Field in 15:06.0 on opening night with Mantecon absent, then was second at the Horse Park in 15:24.4, 2.3 seconds back. Second until he beats his teammate, and the two of them own the two fastest times by a 3A boy this year.
3. Jack Michalak, Belen Jesuit, Jr.
Third at the Southern Showcase in 15:01.7, 45 seconds faster than his Cecil Field time, ahead of Sean Cunningham, Douglas Seth and Bryant Olson. Seventh at Cecil Field in 15:47.0, seventeenth at the Horse Park in 16:13.8. Third is a call. Howdeshell beat him at Cecil Field, Ross and Aguilar beat him at the Horse Park, and the rule would leave him behind all three; a 15:01.7 in a championship field, ahead of every Florida boy there but his own two teammates, is the reason we are not waiting. The day he meets any of them, the grass decides.
4. Isaiah Howdeshell, Largo, Sr.
Did not race. Third at Cecil Field in 15:20.0 on opening night, then wins at Parker Valby in 16:05.8 and Seffner Christian in 16:07.2, neither held against him. He beat Michalak, Kiros, Hagen, Aguilar and Johnson at Cecil Field, and the only 3A boy who has beaten him is Cruz. Fourth, behind Michalak, on the call explained above; the rule alone would have him third, and it will again the moment he runs against Michalak and wins.
5. Jonathan Kiros, Chiles, Sr.
Nineteenth in the Southern Showcase championship race in 15:36.5, worth about 16:02 at Cecil Field. Ninth at Cecil Field in 15:47.0, tenth at the Horse Park in 16:01.4. Tenth to fifth on the rule: he beat Hagen at Cecil Field, Ross, Aguilar and Ilea at the Horse Park, and has lost only to Belen's three and Howdeshell. He and Harris have not met.
6. Gabriel Harris, Lake Wales, Sr.
Third at the Katie Caples Invitational in 16:04.0, behind Andrew Sides of Buchholz 4A and Will Moss of Montverde Academy 2A, and 20 seconds ahead of Ross. Third at Jim Ryun in 16:21.1 in August, second at St. Cloud in 15:43.8, three tenths behind Rivera. He beat Ross on Saturday and Ilea at Jim Ryun, and no boy on this list has beaten him; he and Kiros have not met. Sixth, where he was.
7. Luke Ross, Ponte Vedra, Sr.
Fifth at Katie Caples in 16:24.0, behind Harris, and Ponte Vedra was second in the team race. Second at Spikes and Spurs in 16:04.9 in August, eleventh at the Horse Park in 16:02.8, where he beat Aguilar, Ilea and Michalak. Eighth to seventh: Harris beat him on Saturday, Kiros beat him at the Horse Park, and he has beaten every boy below him that he has met.
8. Kevin Aguilar, Mater Lakes, Sr.
Third in the Spanish River Race of Champions on Friday night in 15:48.0, two tenths behind Martin Fernandez of Doral Academy 4A and a second and a half behind the winner, Casey Sangely of Spanish River 4A. Sixteenth at Cecil Field in 16:00.0, twelfth at the Horse Park in 16:03.2; three races, none slower than 16:04 on the clock. New to the ten at eighth: he beat Hagen and Johnson at Cecil Field and Ilea and Michalak at the Horse Park, and Ross beat him in Ocala.
9. Liam Ilea, Tavares, Jr.
Won the Coach Joe McKinney Classic in 16:19.4, 15 seconds ahead of Camden Thompson of Hagerty 4A, on a course that reads about 23 seconds slow. Five races, more than anyone in the ten: seventh at Jim Ryun, second at Whispering Pines in 16:00.6, 31st at the Horse Park in 16:30.2, second at Astronaut in 16:21.5, and Saturday. He beat Johnson at Astronaut; Ross, Aguilar and Kiros beat him at the Horse Park and Harris at Jim Ryun, which is exactly where ninth puts him.
10. Brody Johnson, Rockledge, Sr.
Won the Rockledge Raider Classic on Friday in 16:01.9, four tenths ahead of Trevor Berquist of Vanguard, and the win is not held against him. Twenty-third at Cecil Field in 16:15.0, second at Kowboy in 16:04.9, third at Astronaut in 16:32.8. First out a week ago, tenth now, and August is doing the work: he beat Hagen at Cecil Field, and Ilea beat him at Astronaut. His teammate Noah Childrey, ninth last week, was sixth at Rockledge behind him and is out.
Just missed
Reed Hagen (Fort Myers, So.) is first out, from fourth. Second at the North Port Invite in 15:30.3, ten seconds behind Rivera, on the fastest-reading course of the week; Kiros, Aguilar and Johnson all beat him at Cecil Field, nobody has met him since, and a loss stands until they do. Dylan Macias-Buenrostro (Mariner, Jr.) was fourth at North Port in 15:38.5, two places behind Hagen, who has now beaten him twice. Jeb Bremerman (Naples, So.) was fifth there in 15:39.0, half a second behind Macias-Buenrostro. Owen Tucker (Gulf Breeze, Jr.) has not raced since the Gulf Coast Stampede. Isaiah Renn (Leon) is on one August race, and Leon did not race this week. Noah Childrey of Rockledge, ninth a week ago, was sixth at Rockledge in 16:32.9 behind Johnson and drops out.
How we ranked them
- Courses do not all run the same speed, so we do not compare raw times. Cecil Field is the yardstick; for other meets we use runners who raced both that course and last year's state meet to work out what a time was worth.
- A runner is ranked on his whole season, weighted toward the most recent race: this week counts five times, last week four, week three three times, week two twice, opening weekend once. A race he won is never allowed to lower that figure.
- A head-to-head loss stands until the two runners meet again, whatever either has run elsewhere since. Where results form a loop, the most recent meeting decides and a newer chain of results outranks an older direct one. A real result within a few seconds of a projection outranks the projection.
- Runners who have not opened are ranked on last November and marked (P). A missed week is never held against anyone.
- Grades and classes are 2026-27, resolved against the FHSAA classification documents.
- Three placings to be clear about. Michalak third is a call over Howdeshell, Ross and Aguilar, all of whom beat him earlier this season, and it expires the day he meets any of them. Kiros fifth and Hagen eleventh are the rule: a loss stands until the two runners meet again.
- Almost every course this week read fast against Cecil Field: the Southern Showcase about 25 seconds, North Port about 44, Spanish River about 28, Katie Caples about 14, Rockledge about 7. The Coach Joe McKinney Classic read about 23 seconds slow. Raw times dropped across the class and the leveled figures moved much less.
- Mantecon's Horse Park win, Howdeshell's wins at Parker Valby and Seffner Christian and Johnson's at Rockledge are all listed and none is counted against them.
