Florida Class 1A boys cross country through five weeks: August 21-September 19, 2026
The best race by a Class 1A boy this fall was run in Alabama. Sean Cunningham of Providence, a senior, was eleventh of 250 in the Southern Showcase championship race in 15:15.7, a time no other 1A boy has come within 36 seconds of this year, and he is seventh on the statewide list. He goes from third to first. That is a call, not a rule outcome, and we will say so plainly: Elijah Arterburn of Atlantic Christian, a senior, beat him at Cecil Field on August 21, 26th to 34th, and the two have not met since. The rule we hold everywhere else on this list, that a loss stands until the two runners meet again, would keep Arterburn above him. We are ranking the Huntsville run instead, the same call the statewide list makes, and it expires the day they line up together.
Dominic Ferguson of Rocky Bayou Christian, a senior, is second on one race, his 16:28.3 for second at Pace on September 5, worth about 15:49 at Cecil Field. That was two weeks ago, not four, and a missed week is never held against anybody. David Barton of Maclay, a senior, is third: he beat Arterburn at Cecil Field, 24th to 26th, neither has met the other since, and he ran 15:51.5 in the same Huntsville race as Cunningham.
Below them the list is mostly the head-to-head rule doing its work: Jack Kline over Matteo Kirwan on Cecil Field, Benjamin Francis over Lucian Burns on Pine Crest, Isaiah Manderson behind Barton and Kline on the Horse Park. Kirwan moves from ninth to seventh without a rated race, because his Bulldog win does not count against him and the two boys who were above him ran leveled figures a shade slower on Friday. This is data and judgment, and we will miss somebody.
A runner is ranked on his whole season, with the most recent race counting most, and a race he won never counts against him. As always, this is data plus judgment, and we will miss somebody along the way. A (P) next to a name means that runner has not opened yet and we are going on last November. How we sorted everybody out is at the bottom. Races are not won until the kids have run. Enjoy.

1. Sean Cunningham, Providence, Sr.
Eleventh of 250 in the Southern Showcase championship race in 15:15.7, worth about 15:41 at Cecil Field, ahead of Barton in 31st. A week earlier he won the Coach Hope Invitational in 16:42.7 out of 91, 41 seconds clear of John William Martin of Fernandina Beach 2A, and that win is not held against him. He opened with 16:23.0 for 34th at Cecil Field, eight places behind Arterburn, and that is the one result on this list that runs against him. First on a call: the rule would keep Arterburn above him, we are ranking the Huntsville run, and the call ends the day they meet.
2. Dominic Ferguson, Rocky Bayou Christian, Sr.
Did not race. His season is one run, second at the Pace Patriot Invitational on September 5 in 16:28.3, 20 seconds behind Bryant Olson of Niceville 4A, on a course that reads slow, worth about 15:49 at Cecil Field. Only Cunningham's Huntsville run is a better leveled mark in the class. Two weeks since he ran, not four, and a missed week is never held against anybody. He has not met anyone on this list, so he sits second on figure, behind Cunningham on the call explained above.
3. David Barton, Maclay, Sr.
Thirty-first in the Southern Showcase championship race in 15:51.5, worth about 16:17 at Cecil Field, the second-fastest time by a 1A boy this fall, and Maclay finished 24th of 28 in that race. He ran 16:15.0 for 24th at Cecil Field, two places ahead of Arterburn, and 16:21.1 for 21st at the Horse Park, ahead of Kline and Manderson. His only loss this season is to Cunningham on Saturday. Fourth to third, and above Arterburn on the August result until the two meet again.
4. Elijah Arterburn, Atlantic Christian, Sr.
Ninth in the Spanish River Race of Champions in 16:02.5, three places and eight seconds ahead of Francis, on a course that reads about half a minute fast. Four rated races, all of them good: 16:19.0 at Cecil Field, second at Pine Crest in 16:16.9 behind Martin Fernandez of Doral 4A, the Dr. Garcia Bulldog Invite win in 16:23.9. He beat Cunningham at Cecil Field, and the rule alone would keep him above the boy who is now first. Second to fourth on that call, behind Barton on the Cecil Field result, and he takes the top spot back the day he beats Cunningham again.
5. Logan Haley, Branford, Jr.
Did not race. His season is one run, the Buchholz Bobcats Classic on September 12, which he won in 16:17.9 out of 203, nine seconds clear of Evan Kirby of Fletcher 4A and Luke Engels of Eastside 2A. Buchholz reads a shade fast, so the run is worth about 16:30 at Cecil Field. A junior, and he has not met anybody on this list. Fifth for a second week, on figure.
6. Jack Kline, Cornerstone Classical Academy, Jr.
Did not race. Twenty-third at the Horse Park in 16:23.7, two places behind Barton and four ahead of Manderson, after 16:33.0 for 46th at Cecil Field. He beat Kirwan at Cecil Field, 46th to 50th, and that result holds him above his Circle Christian rival until they meet again. Sixth for a second week, and the first man on a Cornerstone Classical team that is third on the team list.
7. Matteo Kirwan, Circle Christian, So.
Won the Bulldog Invitational on Saturday in 17:39.2 out of 60, six seconds ahead of his teammate Jonah Lehman-Saba, on a course that reads about a minute slow for boys. A win never lowers a figure, so he is ranked on his 16:34.0 for 50th at Cecil Field in August. Cunningham, Barton, Arterburn and Kline all beat him that night, and each of those results stands. A sophomore. Ninth to seventh: he has not met Francis or Burns, and both of them ran leveled figures a shade slower on Friday.
8. Benjamin Francis, Highlands Christian, Sr.
Twelfth in the Spanish River Race of Champions in 16:10.4, three places behind Arterburn, on a course that reads fast, so the run is worth about 16:38 at Cecil Field. Fifth at Pine Crest in 16:36.2, one place ahead of Burns, and fourth at Dr. Garcia in 16:53.4 behind Arterburn's win. Three races, each inside the top twelve of a big South Florida field. Eighth for a second week, above Burns on the Pine Crest result.
9. Lucian Burns, Marathon, So.
Second of 379 in the Spanish River 1A-2A race in 16:18.7, five seconds behind Michael Gomez of FAU High 2A and ahead of Lukas Arrojo of True North and Nash Akers of Southwest Florida Christian. The course reads about half a minute fast, so the run is worth about 16:46 at Cecil Field. Fourth at King of the Hill in 17:14.4 out of 339 on a course that reads slow, sixth at Pine Crest in 16:37.1, one place behind Francis. A sophomore with three races inside 16:47 leveled. Seventh to ninth, behind Francis on Pine Crest and behind Kirwan on figure; the two have not met.
10. Isaiah Manderson, Pensacola Christian, Sr.
Did not race. Sixth at the Gulf Coast Stampede on September 12 in 16:35.0 out of 258, the first 1A boy home behind three Alabama runners, Owen Tucker of Gulf Breeze 3A and Donovan Carmichael of West Florida 3A. Twenty-seventh at the Horse Park in 16:28.4, four places behind Kline and six behind Barton, and both of those results stand. He opened with 17:34.7 at Pine Forest, and each race since has been better than the last in Cecil Field terms. Tenth for a second week, and the front man for the team that is first on the 1A team list.
Just missed
Broderick Olson (Cornerstone Classical Academy, Sr.) is first out on 16:36.0 at Cecil Field and 16:45.4 at the Horse Park; he did not race this week. Eli Domico (Indian Rocks Christian, So.) was 17th at the North Port Invite in 16:17.9, but North Port reads 44 seconds fast for boys, so the run is worth about 17:02 at Cecil Field and his 16:11.2 at IMG is still the run that carries him. Conor Kiley (Admiral Farragut, Sr.) won the Largo Invitational on Thursday in 17:09.7 on a course priced from a thin sample, and the win is not held against him. John Curley (St. Edward's, Sr.) was seventh in the Spanish River 1A-2A race in 16:51.4, one place behind Akers. James Roland (Harvest Community, Jr.) won the Lake Buena Vista Invitational in 16:42.4, eight seconds clear, on a course that reads fast; the win is not counted against him and he is ranked on his 17:03.0 from Cecil Field.
How we ranked them
- Courses do not all run the same speed, so we do not compare raw times. Cecil Field is the yardstick; for other meets we use runners who raced both that course and last year's state meet to work out what a time was worth.
- A runner is ranked on his whole season, weighted toward the most recent race: this week counts five times, last week four, week three three times, week two twice, opening weekend once. A race he won is never allowed to lower that figure.
- A head-to-head loss stands until the two runners meet again, whatever either has run elsewhere since. Where results form a loop, the most recent meeting decides and a newer chain of results outranks an older direct one. A real result within a few seconds of a projection outranks the projection.
- Runners who have not opened are ranked on last November and marked (P). A missed week is never held against anyone.
- Grades and classes are 2026-27, resolved against the FHSAA classification documents.
- One call on this list is not a rule outcome: Cunningham first over Arterburn, who beat him at Cecil Field in August. The statewide list makes the same call. It is flagged in both entries and expires the day they meet.
- The Bulldog Invitational reads about a minute slow for boys and Kirwan's win there is listed and not counted. The Spanish River course reads about half a minute fast, which is why Francis and Burns ran faster on the clock on Friday and moved down a place.
