Marcelo Mantecon ran 14:41.6 to win the Southern Showcase in Alabama with Armando Cruz and Jack Michalak behind him, Axel Sallault ran 15:05.9 at Hawks on the Hill, the fastest time on a Florida course this fall by anyone outside IMG Academy, and moves to third, and Fletcher Rodbro drops out of the ten after three Floridians beat him in Huntsville.
Florida boys cross country, through five weeks: August 21-September 19, 2026
Belen went to Huntsville and came home with the first three places in the Southern Showcase championship race. Marcelo Mantecon won it in 14:41.6 out of 250, the fastest time by a Florida boy this fall by a wide margin, Armando Cruz was second in 14:58.6 and Jack Michalak third in 15:01.7. The top two do not move. Michalak moves from outside the list to eighth on the run and on the boys he beat to get there.
The other race that mattered was in Clermont. Axel Sallault won Hawks on the Hill in 15:05.9, 23 seconds ahead of Quentin Thompson, and that is the fastest time run on a Florida course this season by anyone outside IMG Academy, a tenth under Cruz's Cecil Field opener. Sallault was eighth at Cecil Field in August behind Thompson, Isaiah Howdeshell, Bryant Olson and Michalak. He has now beaten Thompson, who beat the other three, and the most recent result is the one that counts. He goes from eighth to third.
Three boys who were in the ten last week are out. Fletcher Rodbro was fifteenth in Huntsville behind Michalak, Sean Cunningham and Douglas Seth, and a loss stands until they meet again. Bryant Olson was sixteenth, one place behind Rodbro. Reed Hagen was second at the North Port Invite behind Luis Rivera on a course that reads 44 seconds fast, and his season figure slid.
Every time is weighed against where it was run, using runners who raced both that course and last November's state meet, with Cecil Field as the yardstick. A runner is ranked on his whole season, with the most recent race counting most, and a race he won never counts against him. We use the data and our own eyes, and we will get one or two wrong along the way. The girls' list is here, and the boys team rankings are here.
1. Marcelo Mantecon, Belen Jesuit, Sr., 3A
Won the Southern Showcase championship race in 14:41.6, 17 seconds ahead of his teammate Cruz in a 250-boy field, two weeks after winning the Horse Park in 15:22.1 out of 549. The Huntsville course reads 26 seconds fast by the 23 Florida boys who ran it and last November's state meet, so the run is worth about 15:07 at Cecil Field. Two races, two wins, and the second by 17 seconds.
2. Armando Cruz, Belen Jesuit, Sr., 3A
Second in Huntsville in 14:58.6, and second to Mantecon for the second time this fall, after the Horse Park; he won Cecil Field in 15:06.0 with Mantecon absent. He stays second until he beats his teammate, which is the rule we have held since week 3.
3. Axel Sallault, East Ridge, Sr., 4A
Won Hawks on the Hill in 15:05.9 out of 152, 23 seconds ahead of Thompson, on a course that reads about seven seconds fast. It is the fastest time run on a Florida course this season by anyone outside IMG Academy, and his third win in four starts: Whispering Pines in 15:47.0, Astronaut in 15:57.0, now this. He was eighth at Cecil Field in 15:47.0 on opening night. Thompson beat Howdeshell, Olson and Michalak there and has not lost to any of them since, so Sallault's win over Thompson carries him above all of them.
4. Jaxon Kiper, Strawberry Crest, Sr., 4A
Has not raced on a rated course since he won Jim Ryun in 15:54.3 on August 22, which levels to 15:16 and is still the fourth-best figure in the state. A missed week never counts against anybody. Sallault, who has raced four times, is within three seconds of that figure, and the day Kiper runs again the list will sort itself out.
5. Quentin Thompson, Lake Minneola, Sr., 4A
Second at Hawks on the Hill in 15:29.0 behind Sallault, and Lake Minneola won the meet with 40 points. Second at Cecil Field in 15:16.0, third at the Horse Park behind Mantecon and Cruz. The Cecil Field result over Howdeshell, Olson and Michalak still holds; the Saturday result to Sallault is why he is fifth and not third.
6. Isaiah Howdeshell, Largo, Sr., 3A
Did not race. Third at Cecil Field in 15:20.0, then wins at Parker Valby and Seffner Christian. Thompson beat him on August 21 and they have not met since. He has beaten Michalak, Cunningham and Olson.
7. Luis Rivera, St. Cloud, Sr., 4A
Won the North Port Invite elite race in 15:20.2 out of 184, ten seconds ahead of Reed Hagen, his third win in four starts after Kowboy and his own St. Cloud Invitational. The North Port course reads 44 seconds fast by the 72 boys who also ran the state meet, the biggest reading of the week, so the run levels to about 16:04 and does not count against him; his 15:43.5 at St. Cloud still ranks him. Kiper beat him at Jim Ryun and he has not met anybody else on this list.
8. Jack Michalak, Belen Jesuit, Jr., 3A
Third at the Southern Showcase in 15:01.7, 45 seconds faster than his Cecil Field time, ahead of Cunningham, Seth, Rodbro and Olson. Seventh at Cecil Field in 15:47.0, seventeenth at the Horse Park in 16:13.8, which is why the season figure is 15:47 and not 15:27. He is eighth rather than higher because Howdeshell and Thompson both beat him and neither has lost that result.
9. Sean Cunningham, Providence, Sr., 1A
Eleventh in Huntsville in 15:15.7, the fastest time by a Class 1A boy this year by 36 seconds. Thirty-fourth at Cecil Field in 16:23.0, won the Coach Hope Invitational in 16:42.7 a week ago. He beat Seth by five seconds on Saturday and both Rodbro and Olson. Howdeshell, Thompson and Michalak all have wins over him.
10. Douglas Seth, Flagler Palm Coast, So., 4A
Thirteenth at the Showcase in 15:20.7, a sophomore, two places and a second ahead of Rodbro. Won Spikes and Spurs in August, fourth at the Horse Park in 15:52.7. He is tenth on the Saturday result over Rodbro and Olson, and behind Cunningham, Michalak and Thompson on theirs.
Just missed
Fletcher Rodbro (IMG Academy, Jr.) is first out. He ran 14:54.0 at the IMGA Summit on September 5, still the fastest time on a Florida course this year and the second-fastest by a Florida boy anywhere, and then 15:21.6 for fifteenth in Huntsville behind Michalak, Cunningham and Seth. He stays behind those three until he meets one of them again. Malcolm Spence IV (Flanagan, Sr., 4A) won BCAA Week Three at Quiet Waters in 16:41.3 on a course priced from eight runners whose two readings disagree by 17 seconds; on the reading we use he is 15:42 and twelfth, on the other he would be 15:25 and fifth. Two days later he ran 16:12.7 for thirteenth in the Spanish River Race of Champions, on a course priced from 102 runners, and that is worth 16:40. His own second race says wait. Bryant Olson (Niceville, So., 4A) was sixteenth at the Showcase in 15:27.6, behind Rodbro by a place, and is thirteenth. Dominic Ferguson (Rocky Bayou Christian, Sr., 1A) has one race, second to Olson at Pace, and is fourteenth. Reed Hagen (Fort Myers, So., 3A) was second at North Port in 15:30.3 and is fifteenth, with Dylan Macias-Buenrostro (Mariner, Jr., 3A), fourth in the same race, right behind him. Gabriel Harris (Lake Wales, Sr., 3A) was third at the Katie Caples Invitational in 16:04.0.
Method notes
- A head-to-head loss stands until the two runners meet again. Where results form a loop (A beat B, B beat C, C beat A), the most recent meeting decides, and a newer chain of results outranks an older direct one: Sallault beat Thompson on Saturday, Thompson beat Olson and Howdeshell at Cecil Field, so Sallault sits above both even though both beat him at Cecil Field in August.

- Roy Griak (St. Paul, Minnesota) reads -55.0, and the sample is Nease's own five (n=5), the only Florida team there. That is the same runners measuring their own improvement, and we say so; the reading stands because it is the only one we have.
- Almost every course this week reads fast against Cecil Field. Cecil Field was run in August heat and the anchor is last November's state meet, so five weeks of fitness and cooler evenings show up as negative readings everywhere. That is why raw times dropped across the state and the leveled figures moved much less.
- Not rated this week, sample too small or none: BCAA Week Three at Markham, Lightning Invites 3, Storm Surge, the Gator Crawl, FSDB Home Meet 2, Week 3 at Markham Park, Williston, Bayshore, Hebrew Academy, Superfly 2, Run with the Devils, the Katie Caples Middle School Meet high school races, Tiger XC. Those results are on the site and count for nothing here until a runner from one of them races a rated course.
- The adidas XC Challenge in Cary, North Carolina, where Bolles ran, is not in the pool yet; its out-of-state field has to be tagged first. Nothing on this list depends on it.
- Out-of-state teams at the Southern Showcase and Roy Griak are excluded, including the New Orleans Jesuit that finished second to Belen; Jesuit of Tampa is a different school and is in the pool.
- A race a runner won never lowers his figure. Rivera's North Port win, Sallault's Astronaut and Whispering Pines wins and Howdeshell's two wins are all listed and none is counted against them.
