He ran 18:06.2 on Saturday and he stays second, and if that sentence confuses you, the statewide article has the whole story. The short version: Kiper spent the Central Hillsborough Championships pacing his teammate Elijah Swanson, who ran 20:43 a week earlier, to an 18:06, while another teammate won the meet outright. It was a pace job, it worked, and it would not have counted either way, because Central Hillsborough is a course we cannot measure.

The number that ranks him is unchanged: the Jim Ryun win in 15:54.3, worth about 15:16, a tenth of a second from Thompson's mark. The top two in this class are effectively tied, and Strawberry Crest is not entered at the Horse Park, so they stay untied for now.

He ran on Saturday, he ran 18:06.2, and he stays fourth.

Here is what happened. Kiper finished fifth at the Central Hillsborough Championships in 18:06.2. Sixth, in 18:06.2, was his teammate Elijah Swanson, whose time at the Jim Ryun Invitational eight days earlier was 20:43.9. Kiper took a 20:43 runner to 18:06 and crossed the line with him. Meanwhile Strawberry Crest's James Nolan, who did not race at all in week one, won the thing in 16:33.7, by 1:15.9. That is not a bad day from Kiper. That is a pacing job, and it worked on more than Swanson: Parke Schiebel went 19:39.9 to 18:47.8 in the same eight days.

It would not have changed the ranking either way, because Central Hillsborough is one of the six courses we cannot rate — exactly one runner in that field also ran the 2025 state meet. The number that ranks him is still the Jim Ryun win, 15:54.3 out of 276 varsity runners, which converts to 15:16.1 on the Holloway offset. He remains a runner with one converted mark and no head-to-head against anybody ahead of him, and Strawberry Crest is not entered at the Horse Park.

The new name of the weekend. Kiper won the Jim Ryun Invitational in 15:54.3, 23 seconds clear of Antonino Pipia of Plant, out of a 252-runner field. Jim Ryun graded 38.2 seconds slow off 40 returners, which prices that at 15:16.1 Cecil-equivalent — one tenth behind Thompson.

He has no 2025 state finals mark. Strawberry Crest's one state qualifier last fall was a senior and is gone, so the school has nobody on the returner list and there is no November number to check him against and no returning-class ranking he ought to have had. That is the only reason he is second: Thompson's mark was made against Cruz, Isaiah Howdeshell and the rest of the Elite field, while Kiper's rests on a conversion and a 23-second win over a field he was never really in a race with. Nothing about the mark itself is suspect. The first time these two line up, this list gets rewritten.

The name that isn't in any preseason ranking, because he has no 2025 state finish on record and Strawberry Crest's one runner in Tallahassee last fall has graduated.
