Annabella Tomasic ran 17:24.0 to win the Katie Caples Invitational by 71 seconds and moves to first on a call, Lyla Hallick won Rockledge in 18:10.8, Emma Poekert and Lydia Vincent were second and third at North Port, and Lainee Mercer won Mitchell.
Florida Class 3A girls cross country through five weeks: August 21-September 19, 2026
The best race of the weekend by a Florida girl came from a 3A sophomore. Annabella Tomasic of Bishop Moore won the Katie Caples Invitational elite race in 17:24.0, 71 seconds ahead of Camila Giles of Bishop Kenny, a junior, and only Emma Balaban's 17:14.1 at IMG is faster by a Florida girl this fall. The course reads about half a minute fast for girls, so the run is worth about 17:54 at Cecil Field, and Bishop Moore beat Bishop Kenny by a point in the team race on the same afternoon.
Tomasic is first, Lyla Hallick of Vanguard, a sophomore, is second, and Katelin Wilcox of East Lake, a senior, is third. That is a call, not a rule outcome, so we will say so plainly. Hallick beat Tomasic at the Horse Park on September 5, second to third. Wilcox beat Hallick at Cecil Field in August, third to fourth. None of the three has met since, and the rule we hold everywhere else on this list, that a loss stands until the two runners meet again, would leave Wilcox first, Hallick second and Tomasic third, exactly where they were a week ago. We are ranking the 17:24 instead. The two older results are still on the books, the call expires the day any two of them line up together, and the statewide list has them sixth, seventh and eighth in the same order. We could be wrong about it; that is why it is written as a call and not a rule.
Hallick won the Rockledge Raider Classic in 18:10.8, her best of the year. Wilcox did not race. Lainee Mercer of Springstead, a junior, won the Mitchell Mustang Invite and moves to fourth. Emma Poekert of Cypress Creek, a junior, and Lydia Vincent of Zephyrhills, a senior, were second and third behind Katherine Eudaly of Plant 4A at the North Port Invite, a second and a half apart, and that finish orders them at seventh and eighth. Olivia Davis of Satellite drops out.
A runner is ranked on her whole season, with the most recent race counting most, and a race she won never counts against her. As always, this is data plus judgment, and we will miss somebody along the way. A (P) next to a name means that runner has not opened yet and we are going on last November. How we sorted everybody out is at the bottom. Races are not won until the kids have run. Enjoy.

1. Annabella Tomasic, Bishop Moore, So.
Won the Katie Caples Invitational elite race in 17:24.0 out of 99, 71 seconds clear of Giles, and led Bishop Moore to the team title by a point over Bishop Kenny. Katie Caples reads about half a minute fast for girls, so the run is worth about 17:54 at Cecil Field; only Balaban has a faster single race by a Florida girl this fall. Third at the Horse Park in 18:28.4 behind Natalia Gaona-Zelaya of Wiregrass Ranch 4A and Hallick, her only other race. First on the call explained at the top: under the rule the Horse Park loss to Hallick would hold her third, and we are ranking the 17:24 until they meet again. Third to first.
2. Lyla Hallick, Vanguard (Ocala), So.
Won the Rockledge Raider Classic in 18:10.8 out of 76, 26 seconds ahead of Selah Vignier of West Shore 2A, her fastest time of the year in her fourth race. Fourth at Cecil Field in 18:37.0, second at Whispering Pines in 18:25.4, second at the Horse Park in 18:22.5, and every run between 18:10 and 18:37 on the clock: the best body of work in the class. Second either way. Under the rule she is second because she beat Tomasic at the Horse Park and lost to Wilcox at Cecil Field; on the call she is second with the two of them the other way round. Her Horse Park result over Tomasic is still on the books the day they meet again.
3. Katelin Wilcox, East Lake, Sr.
Did not race. Third at Cecil Field in 18:35.0, one place and two seconds ahead of Hallick, then a second at Parker Valby behind Katherine Eudaly of Plant 4A and a win at Seffner Christian in 19:15.9, a course that reads slow, worth about 18:32 at Cecil Field. No 3A girl has beaten her this season, and under the rule that keeps her first: her Cecil Field result over Hallick stands until they meet again. Third on the call explained at the top, and she did not lose a race to get there. The first time she lines up with either girl above her, the grass decides.
4. Lainee Mercer, Springstead, Jr.
Won the Mitchell Mustang Invite in 18:53.7 out of 119, 78 seconds ahead of Quynh Tollon of Osceola, her first win of the season. Mitchell reads a little slow for girls and the rating is thin, and as a win the run is not held against her either way. Second at Ragin' Storm in 19:11.3, worth about 18:36, and fourth at the Horse Park in 18:40.6 behind Gaona-Zelaya, Hallick and Tomasic; those three are the only girls who have finished ahead of her this fall. Sixth to fourth, past Giles and Vincent on figure. She beat Tanenbaum and Poekert at the Horse Park, and both sit below her on that result.
5. Camila Giles, Bishop Kenny, Jr.
Second at the Katie Caples Invitational in 18:35.0, 71 seconds behind Tomasic and three ahead of teammate Jillian Jakab, in a 99-girl elite race. Won the Buchholz Bobcats Classic in 18:37.2 a week earlier, and the two runs are two seconds apart on the clock; Katie Caples reads fast and Buchholz about even, so the Buchholz race is the better of the two at Cecil Field. Fourth to fifth as Mercer went past on figure. Tomasic is the only girl who has beaten her this fall, and Bishop Kenny sees Bishop Moore again in November.
6. Emma-Claire Tanenbaum, Chiles, So.
Did not race. Sixth at Cecil Field in 18:48.0 and seventh at the Horse Park in 19:00.2, two runs that say the same thing, and nothing since September 5. Ninth to sixth without running a step, on the rule: she beat Poekert at the Horse Park and Ables at Cecil Field, and Poekert beat Vincent at North Port on Saturday, so the chain puts her above all three. Chiles has not had a finish since Ocala; the Nights of Thunder varsity race was called off for lightning.
7. Emma Poekert, Cypress Creek (Wesley Chapel), Jr.
Second at the North Port Invite elite race in 18:23.2 out of 144, 46 seconds behind Eudaly of Plant 4A and a second and a half ahead of Vincent, her fastest time of the year in her fifth race. North Port reads about 40 seconds fast for girls, so the run is worth about 19:03 at Cecil Field, in line with Jim Ryun, Whispering Pines and the Horse Park, which all say about 19:00; the Land O' Lakes win in 18:48.2 a week earlier is not held against her. First out a week ago by half a second, seventh now. The North Port result over Vincent is what puts her above a girl with the better season figure, and Tanenbaum's Horse Park result over her is what keeps her below Tanenbaum.
8. Lydia Vincent, Zephyrhills, Sr.
Third at the North Port Invite in 18:24.8, a second and a half behind Poekert, her fastest time of the year by nine seconds. Second at Lecanto in 18:40.7, third at Whispering Pines in 18:34.1 behind Gaona-Zelaya and Hallick, and a Grayling Memorial win in 18:40.0 on a course we could not price. Four races, all inside 18:41 on the clock, and a better season figure than the two girls above her. Fifth to eighth on the rule and nothing else: Poekert beat her on Saturday, Tanenbaum beat Poekert at the Horse Park, and a loss stands until they meet again.
9. Kaia Ables, Chiles, Sr.
Did not race. Eleventh at Cecil Field in 18:59.0 on August 21 is still her only finish; Chiles was entered at Nights of Thunder and the varsity race was called off. A missed week is never held against anyone, and the figure has not moved. Eighth to ninth as Poekert came in above her. Tanenbaum beat her at Cecil Field, so her teammate sits above her until they race again.
10. Ashton Dahlem, Gulf Breeze, Sr.
Did not race. The Pace Patriot win in 19:49.7 on September 5, by 75 seconds, on a course that reads slow, worth about 19:03 at Cecil Field, is her only race. She ran 18:35.8 at state last November. Tenth for a second week; she has met nobody on this list, so she sits on the figure alone, and one more race would tell us a lot.
Just missed
Jillian Jakab (Bishop Kenny, Sr.) is first out: third at the Katie Caples Invitational in 18:38, three seconds behind Giles, after a third at Buchholz in her opener. Cierra Mills (Vanguard, Sr.) was third at the Rockledge Raider Classic in 18:49.9 behind Hallick and Vignier, and beat Davis there. Olivia Davis (Satellite, Fr.) was sixth at Rockledge in 19:25.9 and drops from seventh; the Mills result over her stands until they meet again. Ella Valentina Valenzuela (Bishop Moore, Jr.) was fifth at Katie Caples in 18:57, the second scorer in Bishop Moore's win. Cecelia Lear (Mount Dora, Jr.) was second at the Coach Joe McKinney Classic in 19:26.7, ten seconds behind Anne Vanos of Boone 4A.
How we ranked them
- Courses do not all run the same speed, so we do not compare raw times. Cecil Field is the yardstick; for other meets we use runners who raced both that course and last year's state meet to work out what a time was worth.
- A runner is ranked on her whole season, weighted toward the most recent race: this week counts five times, last week four, week three three times, week two twice, opening weekend once. A race she won is never allowed to lower that figure.
- A head-to-head loss stands until the two runners meet again, whatever either has run elsewhere since. Where results form a loop, the most recent meeting decides and a newer chain of results outranks an older direct one. A real result within a few seconds of a projection outranks the projection. There is one call on this list that is not a rule outcome: Tomasic first over Hallick and Wilcox, although Hallick beat her at the Horse Park and Wilcox beat Hallick at Cecil Field. It is flagged in all three entries and expires the day any two of them meet.
- Runners who have not opened are ranked on last November and marked (P). A missed week is never held against anyone.
- Grades and classes are 2026-27, resolved against the FHSAA classification documents.
- Course readings this week, in plain words: Katie Caples reads about half a minute fast for girls, North Port about 40 seconds fast, Rockledge a few seconds fast, and Mitchell a touch slow on a thin rating. Cecil Field was run in August heat and the anchor is last November's state meet, so most courses read fast this deep into the season; raw times dropped, leveled figures moved much less.
