Team ranking writeups

#1 — 3A Girls Week 1 · 84 points (P)

Did not enter a meet. Five returners, none of whom opened: Taylor Lawhon 18:54.8, Camila Giles 19:16.9, Jillian Jakab 19:36.6, Rebecca McEnany 19:58.0, Ava McEnany 20:30.8. Average 19:39.4, spread 1:36.0.

They are the No. 1 girls team in Florida in any class, and they got there while being charged 28.8 seconds a runner for not racing. Reclassification moved them up from 2A with their scoring core intact, and it dropped a state-title-caliber team into the deepest girls class in the state.

The honest caveat runs both ways. Nobody has seen this team in 2026, and five runners is exactly five — there is no sixth on the board, so any injury is a scoring crisis rather than an inconvenience. But 84 points in a 45-team 3A field, from a projection that assumes nobody got any faster, is not a placement you argue with. It is a placement you go beat.

#2 — 3A Boys Week 1 · 190 points (P)

Did not enter a meet. Entered here at its returning five's 2025 state times plus the 0.6-second August conversion: Thomas Milton 16:36.5, Ethan Reid 16:37.1, Brian Martinez 16:41.9, Quinn Mullaney 17:16.2, Dayne Kimball 17:17.2. Average 16:53.8, spread 0:40.7.

That spread is the story. It is the tightest one-through-five in 3A by better than a minute, and it comes from five runners who have already done it in a state meet rather than from one August afternoon. The projection is close to neutral for boys — the same 162 runners were 0.6 seconds slower at Cecil in August than at state in November — so this is not a generous placement. It credits Bishop Kenny with no summer improvement and no incoming freshman while every team below it is stuck with exactly what it ran.

Sixth in Florida overall. They are the team most likely to have moved and the team we know least about.

#1 — Overall Girls Week 1 · 271 (P)

The best returning five in the state, and it is not especially close: Taylor Lawhon, Camila Giles, Jillian Jakab and the McEnany sisters averaged 19:10.6 at the state meet inside a 1:36 spread. Converted forward, that is a 19:39.4 team average with the same spread — better than anything that actually ran this weekend.

Our preseason projection had Bishop Kenny first in 3A at 49 points, the lowest projected score of any girls team in Florida in any class. Nothing that happened Friday or Saturday challenged it, because nothing that happened Friday or Saturday involved them.

They are also the team with the most to lose from this method, in the sense that they have proved nothing since November and are being ranked first on that basis. First is what the evidence says. The evidence is nine months old.

#6 — Overall Boys Week 1 · 558 (P)

The team that changes this list.

Bishop Kenny returns five from the state meet at a 16:53.2 average with a 0:40.7 spread — tighter than any team in Florida averaging under 17:30 actually managed to run in August. Thomas Milton 16:36.5, Ethan Reid 16:37.1, Brian Martinez 16:41.9, Quinn Mullaney 17:16.2, Dayne Kimball 17:17.2.

They did not enter a meet. Projected third in 3A at 103 points, behind Belen and Vanguard, and sixth in the state on the only scale that puts everybody in the same race.

The risk on a team like this is obvious: five returners is the minimum, so there is no margin if one of them is hurt or gone. The upside is that a forty-second pack is the hardest thing in cross country to build and the easiest thing to keep.
