Florida Class 3A girls cross country through three weeks: August 21-September 5, 2026
The 3A champion finally raced, and she was beaten by a sophomore from her own class. Lyla Hallick ran 18:22.5 for second at the Florida Horse Park on Saturday, six seconds ahead of Annabella Tomasic, who was third in 18:28.4, nearly a minute slower than she ran on the same grass a year ago. Hallick has now raced three times and gotten faster every time. Tomasic has raced once and lost to two girls. And the girl at the top of the class is the one who beat Hallick the only time they raced: Katelin Wilcox, two seconds in front at Cecil Field on opening night, and beaten since only by Katherine Eudaly. That is the top of 3A this week, and it is going to change again the next time any two of them meet.
Starting this week a runner is ranked on her whole season, with the most recent race counting most, and a race she wins never counts against her. As always, this is data plus judgment, and we will miss somebody along the way. A (P) next to a name means she has not opened yet and we are going on last November. How we sorted everybody out is at the bottom. Races are not won until the kids have run. Enjoy.

1. Katelin Wilcox, East Lake, Sr.
18:35.0 at Cecil Field on opening night, still the fastest raw time by a 3A girl on a neutral course this season, and two seconds in front of Hallick in the only race the two of them have run together. On Saturday she was second at Parker Valby in 19:37.7, 49 seconds behind Katherine Eudaly, on a quick course, and it was not a good day. On the numbers alone that run drops her to tenth in the class.
We are not doing that. Eudaly, the only girl who has beaten her, is ranked fifth in Florida, and Wilcox beat Hallick head to head. Compare the races and it is a toss-up between the two of them; the head-to-head is the tiebreak, and it is hers. First, until they meet again.
2. Lyla Hallick, Vanguard, So.
18:37.0 at Cecil Field, 18:25.4 at Whispering Pines, 18:22.5 for second at the Horse Park, her home meet, 19 seconds behind Natalia Gaona-Zelaya of 4A and six ahead of Tomasic. Every race faster than the last, and the 3A champion beaten head to head. She was 19:14 at state last November as a 4A runner; she has taken 52 seconds off that in three weeks. The one girl in the class she has not beaten is the one above her, by two seconds on August 21. Second in the class and ninth in Florida, and it is a toss-up.
She is also running for a program that knows this race. Kelly Parrish and Elizabeth Mulford both won cross country state titles for Vanguard and added 3200 titles on the track. Tori Lawson was the 3A runner-up three Novembers in a row and won the 3200 as a senior. A sophomore leading the class in September is not a new sight in Ocala.
3. Annabella Tomasic, Bishop Moore, So.
The defending champion at 17:35.5, the fastest returning time by any girl in Florida, opened at the Horse Park with 18:28.4 for third and led Bishop Moore to the team win. It was a good race in a deep field. It was also nearly a minute off her winning time on the same course last September, and the girl ranked second finished six seconds ahead. She is ranked on what she ran, behind the two girls who have beaten each other and her. She is one race from being ranked on what she is.
4. Lydia Vincent, Zephyrhills, Sr.
18:40.7 at Lecanto, 18:34.1 at Whispering Pines, and a win at the Grayling Memorial on Saturday by a minute and 46 seconds in 18:40.0, on a course we cannot rate. Seventh in 3A at state in 18:38.4. Three races, all within seven seconds of each other, and she has not lost to a 3A girl since Whispering Pines.
5. Lainee Mercer, Springstead, Jr.
Fourth at the Horse Park in 18:40.6, 18 seconds behind Hallick and 12 behind Tomasic, after 19:11.3 at Ragin' Storm on opening weekend. Third in 3A at state in 18:15.3, the second-fastest returning mark in the class. The Horse Park was the first time she raced Hallick and Tomasic this fall, and she finished behind both.
6. Taylor Lawhon, Bishop Kenny, Sr.: (P)
Runner-up in 2A at state last November in 18:26.0, now in 3A, and still unraced three weeks in. Bishop Kenny has not run a varsity girls race. She holds sixth on the credential, ahead of two Chiles girls who have raced, by four seconds on paper.
7. Emma-Claire Tanenbaum, Chiles, So.
18:48.0 at Cecil Field and 19:00.2 for seventh at the Horse Park, Chiles's first finisher. Fifth in 3A at state in 18:33.7. Two fair courses, twelve seconds apart, the second one in a much deeper field, and eleven seconds ahead of her teammate on the day they both ran Cecil.
8. Kaia Ables, Chiles, Sr.
18:59.0 at Cecil Field, 25 seconds better than her state time, and no race since. She did not score for Chiles at the Horse Park. Eighth until she runs again.
9. Ashton Dahlem, Gulf Breeze, Sr.
Finally opened, and won the Pace Patriot Invitational by 75 seconds in 19:49.7 on one of the slowest courses in the panhandle, worth about 19:03 leveled. Sixth in 3A at state in 18:35.8. One race, and it was a win by more than a minute.
10. Emma Poekert, Cypress Creek, Jr.
Three races: 19:45.3 at Jim Ryun, 18:52.1 at Whispering Pines and 19:04.4 for ninth at the Horse Park. Ninth in 3A at state in 18:40.6. The Horse Park run was seven places and 42 seconds behind Hallick on the same day.
Just missed
Ella Valentina Valenzuela (Bishop Moore, Jr.) is first out on her 19:05.6 for eleventh at the Horse Park, Bishop Moore's second finisher. Camila Giles (Bishop Kenny, Jr.) has not opened and projects on her 18:48.1 from state. Lauren Susnis (Bishop Moore, Sr.) ran 19:25.9 at the Horse Park. Cecelia Lear (Mount Dora, Jr.) ran 19:37.7 at Whispering Pines and 19:12.4 for fourth at St. Cloud.
How we ranked them
- Courses do not all run the same speed, so we do not compare raw times. Cecil Field is the yardstick; for other meets we use runners who raced both that course and last year's state meet to work out what a time was worth. The girls' field ran about half a minute slower in August than at state, and that is removed before a course is rated.
- A runner is ranked on her whole season, weighted toward the most recent race: this week counts three times, last week twice, opening weekend once. A race she won is never allowed to lower that figure.
- Wilcox over Hallick is the Cecil Field head-to-head, two seconds, the only time they have raced; the Parker Valby loss to Eudaly, who is fifth in Florida, does not undo it. Hallick over Tomasic is the Horse Park result. Both match the statewide list, and both are a toss-up the next race can flip.
- Runners who have not opened are ranked on last November and marked (P). A raced runner within a couple of seconds of a projection is ranked ahead of it.
- Grayling could not be rated, so Vincent's win there is reported as run and she is ranked on her first two races.
- Grades and classes are 2026-27, resolved against the FHSAA classification documents.
