Axel Sallault and Quentin Thompson both won on Saturday and hold the top two in Class 4A, and Casey Sangely won the Snake Bite Invite.

Florida Class 4A boys cross country through eight weeks: August 21-October 10, 2026

The FSU Pre-State Invitational, the biggest meet of the fall, was canceled for Hurricane Isaias, so most of the state sat out the weekend. Nobody here is marked down for a race they could not run.

The 4A ten does not change. Axel Sallault of East Ridge won the South Marion Invitational in 16:14.1 by 53 seconds, and Quentin Thompson of Lake Minneola won the Wildwood Invitational in 16:19.0, with Lake Minneola scoring 17. Douglas Seth of Flagler Palm Coast was fourth in his section at the Manhattan Invitational in New York. The Manhattan course is 2.5 miles, so we convert those times to a 5K before we price the course. His run converts to 16:04, close to his season figure, and he holds sixth.

Bryce Motycka of Bartram Trail won HMT in Gainesville, with Andrew Sides of Buchholz eighth. We are treating Buchholz's runs at HMT as a workout, not a race, so it does not count for Sides or against him. Casey Sangely of Spanish River won the Snake Bite Invite in Boca Raton in 15:32.8, ahead of Martin Fernandez and Nicholas Garcia, and leads the Just missed list.

A runner is ranked on his whole season, with the most recent race counting most, and a race he won never counts against him. This is data plus judgment, and we will miss somebody along the way. How we sorted everybody out is at the bottom.

The statewide lists: week 8 boys top 10 and week 8 girls top 10. Last week's version of this list is here. The other class lists this week: 4A girls, 1A boys, 2A boys, 3A boys.

1. Axel Sallault, East Ridge, Sr.

Won the South Marion Invitational on Saturday in 16:14.1, 53 seconds ahead of Asher Inman of Belleview: his fifth win in six starts. Ran 15:05.9 at Hawks on the Hill on September 19, ahead of Thompson. Third statewide.

2. Quentin Thompson, Lake Minneola, Sr.

Won the Wildwood Invitational on Saturday in 16:19.0, 15 seconds ahead of his teammate Jacob Kelly, as Lake Minneola scored 17. Thirteenth of 334 at PR'ville in Huntsville on September 26 in 15:32.7. Second to Sallault at Hawks on the Hill. Fourth statewide.

3. Jaxon Kiper, Strawberry Crest, Sr.

Did not race. Won the Don Bishop Invitational on October 3 in 15:24.2 by 12 seconds over Williams, and Jim Ryun in August. Third by our call, the same call that has him sixth statewide; the next time he races Sallault or Thompson, the grass decides.

4. Matthew Ishee, Nease, Jr.

Did not race. Thirty-seventh in the Great American Race of Champions on October 3 in 15:35.4, the first Florida runner home outside Belen, ahead of Sides, Chopra and Cunningham. Fifteenth at Roy Griak on September 19. Seventh statewide.

5. Andrew Sides, Buchholz, Jr.

Forty-fifth in the Race of Champions on October 3 in 15:39.8, a personal best, behind Ishee and ahead of Chopra. Won the Katie Caples Elite race on September 19 in 15:53.0. Eighth at HMT on Saturday in 17:49.2, which we are treating as a workout. Eighth statewide.

Recovery

Recovery boots for the family that is all in.

Hyperice Normatec 3 compression boots are what college programs use between hard days: a slow squeeze from the feet up that leaves legs feeling fresh for the next workout. A big buy, and one a lot of runners say they use every night in October.

7. Bryant Olson, Niceville, So.

Did not race. Sixteenth at the Showcase on September 19 in 15:27.6, behind Seth and Cunningham. Won Pine Forest and Pace Patriot earlier in the season.

Just missed

Casey Sangely (Spanish River, Sr.) won the Snake Bite Invite on Saturday in 15:32.8, a second ahead of Kayaan Ghaffar of Gulliver; Chopra beat him in Cary on October 3. Martin Fernandez (Doral Academy, Sr.) and Nicholas Garcia (Columbus, Jr.) were third and fourth behind him. Bryce Motycka (Bartram Trail, Sr.) won HMT in 17:07.1 and was second at Bale-N-Trail on September 26 in 15:50.8.

Up next

Most of the state's top teams race this weekend at the New World Fall Spectacular, October 16-17 at Cecil Field in Jacksonville. Next week's lists will lean heavily on it.

How we ranked them

  • Courses do not all run the same speed, so we do not compare raw times. Cecil Field is the yardstick; for other meets we use runners who raced both that course and last year's state meet to work out what a time was worth.
  • A runner is ranked on his whole season, weighted toward the most recent race: this week counts eight times, last week seven, and so on back to opening weekend, which counts once. A race he won is never allowed to lower that figure.
  • A head-to-head loss stands until the two runners meet again, whatever either has run elsewhere since. Where results form a loop, the most recent meeting decides. A runner who beat someone ranked above him moves up to that runner's spot.
  • Head-to-heads from September 12 and earlier no longer order runners. Those races are a month old, and kids have changed since. The times still count in the season figure.
  • The FSU Pre-State Invitational, the biggest meet of the fall, was canceled for Hurricane Isaias. Nobody is marked down for a race they could not run.
  • A missed week is never held against anyone.
  • Grades and classes are 2026-27, resolved against the FHSAA classification documents.
  • Kiper third is a call: his season figure is first in the class, but he has raced once since August.
  • Ishee and Sides above Seth and Olson is the statewide order: they beat Cunningham on October 3, and Cunningham beat Seth and Olson at the Showcase.
  • Buchholz's runs at HMT on October 10 are treated as a workout, not a race, so Motycka's win there does not put him above Sides.

Every result behind this list is in the rankings section, and the full weekend is in the weekend recap.
