Sean Cunningham holds first in Class 1A with Pre-State canceled, and Jack Kline of Cornerstone Classical won the JAC Invitational and moves up to fifth.

Florida Class 1A boys cross country through eight weeks: August 21-October 10, 2026

The FSU Pre-State Invitational, the biggest meet of the fall, was canceled for Hurricane Isaias, so most of the state sat out the weekend. Nobody here is marked down for a race they could not run.

Jack Kline of Cornerstone Classical won the JAC Invitational in Jacksonville in 16:29.1, three seconds ahead of Elijah Parkinson of St. Augustine (3A), with his teammate Broderick Olson fifth, and Cornerstone was third in the team race. JAC reads slow on our numbers, so the run counts for a lot, and Kline moves from seventh to fifth. Logan Haley of Branford was second at HMT in Gainesville and Matteo Kirwan of Circle Christian won the Merritt Island Christian Invitational. Cunningham, Ferguson, Burns and Latimore did not race, and they hold.

A runner is ranked on his whole season, with the most recent race counting most, and a race he won never counts against him. This is data plus judgment, and we will miss somebody along the way. How we sorted everybody out is at the bottom.

The statewide lists: week 8 boys top 10 and week 8 girls top 10. Last week's version of this list is here. The other class lists this week: 1A girls, 2A boys, 3A boys, 4A boys.

1. Sean Cunningham, Providence, Sr.

Did not race. Fifty-ninth in the COROS Race of Champions at the Great American XC Festival on October 3 in 15:50.8, among 340 of the best runners in the country. Eleventh at the Southern Showcase in 15:15.7, still the fastest time by a 1A boy this year. Tenth on the statewide list.

2. Dominic Ferguson, Rocky Bayou Christian, Sr.

Did not race. Won the Argonaut Invitational on September 26 in 16:17.3 by 17 seconds, and his season figure is the best in the class. He and Cunningham have never raced, so he stays second, as on the statewide order, until they do.

3. Lucian Burns, Marathon, So.

Did not race. Won the Race of Thoroughbreds Classic in Miami on October 2 in 16:59.1, by 86 seconds. Second in the Spanish River 1A-2A race on September 18 in 16:18.7, ahead of Latimore.

4. Lucas Latimore, Westminster Academy, Sr.

Did not race. Won the Westminster Academy Invitational on September 28 in 17:16.5, then was third at South Fork on October 3 in 17:12.5, ahead of Arterburn and Francis. Third behind Burns at Spanish River.

5. Jack Kline, Cornerstone Classical Academy, Jr.

Won the JAC Invitational on Saturday in 16:29.1 out of 85, 3.1 seconds ahead of Elijah Parkinson of St. Augustine, with Olson fifth. Sixth in the Bale-N-Trail Elite race on September 26 in 16:06.1, a week after 16:02.8 at the adidas championship in North Carolina. Up from seventh: he has not raced Arterburn or Barton, and his season figure is now ahead of both.

Recovery

The slide every team tent has a pile of after the race.

OOFOS OOahh recovery slides take pressure off tired feet and calves after a 5K on hard Florida ground. Kids wear them on the bus home and around the house.

7. David Barton, Maclay, Sr.

Did not race. Tenth of 341 at the Alexander Invitational in Douglasville, Georgia, on October 3 in 15:29.0, the second-fastest 1A time this year. Cunningham beat him at the Showcase.

8. Logan Haley, Branford, Jr.

Second at HMT in Gainesville on Saturday in 17:17.6, behind Bryce Motycka of Bartram Trail (4A), on a course that reads 42 seconds slow. Won the Buchholz Bobcats Classic on September 12 in 16:17.9 out of 203.

9. Benjamin Francis, Highlands Christian, Sr.

Seventh at the Snake Bite Invite in Boca Raton on Saturday in 16:06.2 out of 148. Second at the Westminster Academy Invitational on September 28, one second behind Latimore, and seventh at South Fork, behind Latimore and Arterburn.

10. Matteo Kirwan, Circle Christian, So.

Won the Merritt Island Christian Invitational on Saturday in 16:31.8 out of 140, ahead of his teammate Jonah Lehman-Saba. Won the Bulldog Invitational on September 19.

Up next

Most of the state's top teams race this weekend at the New World Fall Spectacular, October 16-17 at Cecil Field in Jacksonville. Next week's lists will lean heavily on it.

How we ranked them

  • Courses do not all run the same speed, so we do not compare raw times. Cecil Field is the yardstick; for other meets we use runners who raced both that course and last year's state meet to work out what a time was worth.
  • A runner is ranked on his whole season, weighted toward the most recent race: this week counts eight times, last week seven, and so on back to opening weekend, which counts once. A race he won is never allowed to lower that figure.
  • A head-to-head loss stands until the two runners meet again, whatever either has run elsewhere since. Where results form a loop, the most recent meeting decides. A runner who beat someone ranked above him moves up to that runner's spot.
  • Head-to-heads from September 12 and earlier no longer order runners. Those races are a month old, and kids have changed since. The times still count in the season figure.
  • The FSU Pre-State Invitational, the biggest meet of the fall, was canceled for Hurricane Isaias. Nobody is marked down for a race they could not run.
  • A missed week is never held against anyone.
  • Grades and classes are 2026-27, resolved against the FHSAA classification documents.
  • Cunningham over Ferguson is the statewide order, not a head-to-head: they have never raced. It changes the day they meet.
  • Kline fifth comes from his season figure after his JAC win. He has not met Arterburn or Barton, and neither of them is marked down for sitting out.

Every result behind this list is in the rankings section, and the full weekend is in the weekend recap.
