Sean Cunningham stays first in Class 1A after the Great American Race of Champions, Lucian Burns won the Race of Thoroughbreds and moves to third, and Lucas Latimore of Westminster Academy comes in at fourth.
Florida Class 1A boys cross country through seven weeks: August 21-October 3, 2026
Sean Cunningham of Providence went to North Carolina and was 59th in the COROS Race of Champions at the Great American XC Festival in 15:50.8. He stays first. David Barton of Maclay went to Georgia and ran 15:29.0 for tenth of 341 at the Alexander Invitational, the second-fastest time by a 1A boy this year.
Lucian Burns of Marathon won the Race of Thoroughbreds Classic in Miami by 86 seconds and moves up to third. Lucas Latimore of Westminster Academy comes in at fourth: he won his own school's meet on Monday and beat Elijah Arterburn at the South Fork Invitational on Saturday. Burns beat Latimore at Spanish River in September, so Burns sits above him.
A runner is ranked on his whole season, with the most recent race counting most, and a race he won never counts against him. This is data plus judgment, and we will miss somebody along the way. How we sorted everybody out is at the bottom.
The statewide lists: week 7 boys top 10 and week 7 girls top 10. Last week's version of this list is here. The other class lists this week: 1A girls, 2A boys, 3A boys, 4A boys.
1. Sean Cunningham, Providence, Sr.
Fifty-ninth in the Great American Race of Champions in 15:50.8, among 340 of the best runners in the country. Eleventh at the Southern Showcase in 15:15.7, still the fastest time by a 1A boy this year, ahead of Barton. Tenth on the statewide list.
2. Dominic Ferguson, Rocky Bayou Christian, Sr.
Did not race. Won the Argonaut Invitational on September 26 in 16:17.3 by 17 seconds, and his season figure is the best in the class. He and Cunningham have never raced, so he stays second on the statewide order until they do.
3. Lucian Burns, Marathon, So.
Won the Race of Thoroughbreds Classic in Miami on Friday in 16:59.1, by 86 seconds. Second in the Spanish River 1A-2A race on September 18 in 16:18.7, ahead of Latimore. Up to third.
4. Lucas Latimore, Westminster Academy, Sr.
Won the Westminster Academy Invitational on Monday in 17:16.5, one second ahead of Benjamin Francis, then was third at South Fork on Saturday in 17:12.5, ahead of Arterburn and Francis. Third behind Burns at Spanish River. New to the ten.
5. Elijah Arterburn, Atlantic Christian, Sr.
Fifth at South Fork on Saturday in 17:15.9, behind Latimore, a week after he won the Jensen Beach Invitational in 16:31.6. Ninth in the Spanish River Race of Champions in 16:02.5. Latimore's win Saturday puts Latimore above him.
Gear
A first real running watch that does not cost a month of gas.
The Garmin Forerunner 165 is the watch we point small-school runners to: GPS that holds a signal on wooded courses, heart-rate zones, a bright screen, and the same Garmin Connect app the college programs use. It does the job of watches that cost twice as much.

6. David Barton, Maclay, Sr.
Tenth of 341 at the Alexander Invitational in Douglasville, Georgia, in 15:29.0, 22 seconds under his best and the second-fastest 1A time this year. Cunningham beat him at the Showcase. The Georgia course reads fast, so on our numbers the run is close to his season average; on the clock it is 22 seconds under his previous best.
7. Jack Kline, Cornerstone Classical Academy, Jr.
Did not race. Sixth in the Bale-N-Trail Elite race on September 26 in 16:06.1, a week after 16:02.8 at the adidas championship in North Carolina.
8. Logan Haley, Branford, Jr.
Did not race. One race this fall, a win at the Buchholz Bobcats Classic on September 12 in 16:17.9 out of 203. A missed week never counts against anyone.
9. Benjamin Francis, Highlands Christian, Sr.
Second at the Westminster Academy Invitational on Monday, one second behind Latimore, and seventh at South Fork on Saturday in 17:24.6. Twelfth in the Spanish River Race of Champions in 16:10.4.
10. Matteo Kirwan, Circle Christian, So.
Did not race. Won the Bulldog Invitational on September 19 in 17:39.2 on a course that runs slow. Tenth.
Just missed
Isaiah Manderson (Pensacola Christian, Sr.) won the Daphne Invitational in Alabama in 15:42.0 on September 19 and has not raced since. Eli Domico (Indian Rocks Christian, So.) was third at Don Bishop on Saturday in 16:44.7, behind Kiper and Jonas Williams. Broderick Olson (Cornerstone Classical, Sr.), Lukas Arrojo (True North, So.), who won the Palmer Trinity HS-MS Invitational on September 26 in 17:27.0, and Nash Akers (Southwest Florida Christian, So.) are next.

Free to read, no paywall. Every Class 1A boys race this season went into this list, and every head-to-head was checked by hand. If it helps your team or your kid, you can buy us a coffee.
How we ranked them
- Courses do not all run the same speed, so we do not compare raw times. Cecil Field is the yardstick; for other meets we use runners who raced both that course and last year's state meet to work out what a time was worth.
- A runner is ranked on his whole season, weighted toward the most recent race: this week counts seven times, last week six, and so on back to opening weekend, which counts once. A race he won is never allowed to lower that figure.
- A head-to-head loss stands until the two runners meet again, whatever either has run elsewhere since. Where results form a loop, the most recent meeting decides. A runner who beat someone ranked above him moves up to that runner's spot.
- New this week: head-to-heads from September 12 and earlier no longer order runners. Those races are three weeks and more old, and kids have changed since. The times still count in the season figure.
- A missed week is never held against anyone.
- Grades and classes are 2026-27, resolved against the FHSAA classification documents.
- Cunningham over Ferguson is the statewide order, not a head-to-head: they have never raced. It changes the day they meet.
Every result behind this list is in the rankings section, and the full weekend is in the weekend recap.
