Annabella Tomasic holds first in Class 3A, Jillian Jakab won the JAC Invitational and moves to fourth, and her Bishop Kenny teammate Camila Giles moves to third.

Florida Class 3A girls cross country through eight weeks: August 21-October 10, 2026

The FSU Pre-State Invitational, the biggest meet of the fall, was canceled for Hurricane Isaias, so most of the state sat out the weekend. Nobody here is marked down for a race they could not run.

Jillian Jakab of Bishop Kenny won the JAC Invitational in Jacksonville in 19:22.2, 20 seconds ahead of Kate Brice of Episcopal. Her teammate Camila Giles beat her at Katie Caples on September 19, and they have not met since, so Giles goes above her. That moves both of them ahead of Lainee Mercer and Katelin Wilcox, who did not race; none of the four has met another since September 12.

Annabella Tomasic of Bishop Moore and Lyla Hallick of Vanguard did not race and hold the top two.

A runner is ranked on her whole season, with the most recent race counting most, and a race she won never counts against her. This is data plus judgment, and we will miss somebody along the way. How we sorted everybody out is at the bottom.

The statewide lists: week 8 girls top 10 and week 8 boys top 10. Last week's version of this list is here. The other class lists this week: 3A boys, 1A girls, 2A girls, 4A girls.

1. Annabella Tomasic, Bishop Moore, So.

Did not race. Won the Hagerty Invitational on September 26 in 17:24.8 by 96 seconds, a week after 17:24.0 at Katie Caples, ahead of Giles and Jakab. Sixth statewide.

2. Lyla Hallick, Vanguard (Ocala), So.

Did not race. Won the Craig Speziale Invitational on October 3 in 18:40.8, 43 seconds ahead of Piper Ross. Won Rockledge on September 18 in 18:10.8. Seventh statewide.

3. Camila Giles, Bishop Kenny, Jr.

4. Jillian Jakab, Bishop Kenny, Sr.

Won the JAC Invitational on Saturday in 19:22.2 out of 131, 20 seconds ahead of Brice and ahead of Krueger, as Bishop Kenny was second in the team race without Giles. Third at Katie Caples on September 19 in 18:38.0, behind Giles. First out of the statewide ten.

5. Lainee Mercer, Springstead, Jr.

Gear

The lightest GPS watch most runners will ever wear.

The COROS PACE 3 weighs about an ounce, so you forget it is on in a race, and the battery runs for weeks of training between charges. It does everything a high school runner needs: accurate GPS, heart rate, intervals, and a clean app.

7. Emma-Claire Tanenbaum, Chiles, So.

Just missed

Emma Poekert (Cypress Creek, Jr.) was third at the Wild Bulldog on October 3, behind Mercer and Vincent. Cierra Mills (Vanguard, Sr.) and Reese Cartwright (Vanguard, Sr.) are next. Cecelia Lear (Mount Dora, Jr.) won the Harmony Longhorn Invitational on October 3. Sofia Jimenez (Lourdes, So.) won the 305 Classic on Friday in 19:07.9, and beat Raejanae Ebanks at Spanish River in September.

Honorable mention

Raejanae Ebanks (Dillard, Fr.) was second at the BCAA/MSAA Championship on Friday in 20:17.3. Her Broward wins at Quiet Waters read more than two minutes slow on our numbers, and in the one deep race she has run, the Spanish River Race of Champions, she was 26th. We are holding her out until she races a deep field again.

Up next

Most of the state's top teams race this weekend at the New World Fall Spectacular, October 16-17 at Cecil Field in Jacksonville. Next week's lists will lean heavily on it.

How we ranked them

  • Courses do not all run the same speed, so we do not compare raw times. Cecil Field is the yardstick; for other meets we use runners who raced both that course and last year's state meet to work out what a time was worth.
  • A runner is ranked on her whole season, weighted toward the most recent race: this week counts eight times, last week seven, and so on back to opening weekend, which counts once. A race she won is never allowed to lower that figure.
  • A head-to-head loss stands until the two runners meet again, whatever either has run elsewhere since. Where results form a loop, the most recent meeting decides. A runner who beat someone ranked above her moves up to that runner's spot.
  • Head-to-heads from September 12 and earlier no longer order runners. Those races are a month old, and kids have changed since. The times still count in the season figure.
  • The FSU Pre-State Invitational, the biggest meet of the fall, was canceled for Hurricane Isaias. Nobody is marked down for a race they could not run.
  • A missed week is never held against anyone.
  • Grades and classes are 2026-27, resolved against the FHSAA classification documents.
  • Giles above Jakab is the head-to-head rule: Giles beat her at Katie Caples on September 19, and they have not met since. Jakab above Mercer and Wilcox matches the statewide list, where Giles is tenth and Jakab first out.
  • Ebanks held out is a call: the Quiet Waters course readings rest on few runners, and her only race against a deep field does not agree with them.

Every result behind this list is in the rankings section, and the full weekend is in the weekend recap.
