Florida Class 2A girls cross country, after opening weekend: August 21-22, 2026
Seven of these ten did not pin on a number. Episcopal, the best girls team in 2A, kept its entire squad home while its boys raced at Cecil Field. Carrollton, the second best, did the same. Montverde Academy and Berkeley Prep entered nobody anywhere. Four programs holding seven of the twenty fastest returning marks in this class opened their season by not opening it.
Only three girls in this top ten actually raced, and all three did it in the same field.
As always, this is data plus judgment, and we will miss somebody along the way. A (P) next to a name means she has not opened yet and we are going on last November. How we sorted it out is at the bottom. Races are not won until the kids have run. Enjoy.

1. Selah Vignier, West Shore (Melbourne), Jr.
The 2A state champion, and the only girl in the top three of this class who showed up. Vignier won 2A last November in 18:14.7, the fastest returning mark in the class by 22 seconds, and she opened by finishing eighth in the Cecil Field Elite race in 18:55.0, the deepest girls field anybody in Florida ran into this August.
That is 40 seconds off her state time, which sounds like a step back and is not. Everybody ran slower in August, and Vignier spent the day racing Arabella Duffell, Avery Hartley and Katelin Wilcox instead of a 2A field. Eighth in that company is a better sign than the number looks.
Her next West Shore teammate finished 21:16, so she ran the whole thing alone. She is the clear number one in this class and the only girl here with both the best returning mark and a 2026 result behind it.
2. Kate Brice, Episcopal (Jacksonville), Jr. — (P)
Third in 2A at state in 18:36.8, the second-fastest returning mark in the class, and no opener. Episcopal's boys ran at Cecil Field. Episcopal's girls did not enter, which is a choice a program can make when it is first in 2A on paper and has nothing to prove in August.
She sorts second, eight seconds ahead of Hernandez and eleven behind what Vignier actually ran. Both of those margins are noise. The first time Brice and Vignier line up together, this list changes.
3. Daniela Hernandez, Carrollton (Miami), Sr. — (P)
Fourth in 2A at state in 18:45.2 and the anchor of the quietest good team in Florida. Carrollton is second in 2A behind Episcopal, and like Episcopal it did not race.
She is the runner on this list with the most to gain and the least to show. A senior with the third-best returning mark in her class, one fourth-place state finish to her name, and not a single race yet in her final season.
4. Sofie Stam, Bolles, So.
The best August run by anybody in this class besides Vignier. Stam was tenth in 2A at state in 19:02.4 as a freshman and finished 21st in the Cecil Elite race in 19:20.0, only 18 seconds off her state mark on a day when everybody ran slower. She beat her own projection by eleven seconds.
That is a modest number and a meaningful one, because of who she ran it against and who she ran it alongside. Bolles is the best 2A girls team that actually raced, and Stam was the only one of them who ran to form. Her teammates came through at 20:30, 20:31 and 21:31. She carried the program by herself in the hardest race available.
She is fourth rather than higher because the two projections above her are a little quicker on paper and neither has been given a chance to fail. If Brice and Hernandez stay home again, that argument gets harder to make every week.
5. Graziana Gowdy, Episcopal (Jacksonville), So. — (P)
Twelfth at the state meet in 19:08.9 as a freshman, the sixth-fastest returning mark in 2A, and the second Episcopal name here that did not open.
A freshman running 19:08.9 at state is the profile that improves most between seasons, and hers is the projection most likely to be beaten. It also cannot be beaten from the sideline.
6. Lyla McMillen, Montverde Academy, Jr. — (P)
Sixteenth in 2A at state in 19:15.3. Montverde did not enter a meet on either day, boys or girls. The same school holds the number one returning boy in this class and stayed entirely home.
McMillen and teammate Alafair Scelfo are both top twenty returning marks in 2A and neither has raced a step.
7. Gabriella Socarras, Carrollton (Miami), Sr. — (P)
Seventeenth in 2A at state in 19:17.3 and Carrollton's second scorer behind Hernandez. She, McMillen and Molly Taylor are three projections stacked inside six seconds of each other, which is another way of saying this stretch of the list is not really ordered yet. It is a queue.
8. Molly Taylor, Berkeley Prep (Tampa), Jr. — (P)
Eighteenth in 2A at state in 19:20.9, and the fourth program on this page that did not put a girl on a start line. Berkeley Prep's Lily Ghavami is also a top 25 returning mark in the class and also did not run.
9. Rebecca Lee, Edgewood (Merritt Island), So.
The biggest move by anybody near the front of this class, and the reason this list is not a pure projection exercise. Lee was 79th in 2A at state in 20:56.4 as a freshman, 52nd on the returning list and nowhere near the top thirty. She ran 19:54.0 for 35th in the Cecil Elite race.
That is a 91-second jump, the biggest by any 2A girl who broke 20:30, and she did it in the same race as Vignier and Stam on the yardstick course, with nothing to adjust and nothing to argue about.
It is one race, and August at Cecil rewards a summer of training more than November does. But it is the only hard evidence anybody in this class produced below the top four, and it is worth more than a 19:27 from last fall nobody has been asked to run again. Her next Edgewood teammate ran 21:30, so she is another one out there alone.
10. Holland McKinney, Episcopal (Jacksonville), So. — (P)
Twentieth in 2A at state in 19:27.2, and the third of four Episcopal girls in the class top twenty. She holds the last spot by six tenths of a second, which is not a distinction worth defending.
Episcopal is this whole list in miniature. The best 2A girls team in Florida has four of the twenty fastest returning marks in the class, and after opening weekend we know exactly nothing about any of them that we did not know in November.
Just missed
Barbarita Jedlicka (St. John Paul II, So.) is eleventh by six tenths of a second and the next name through the door. Claire Chanon and Molly Murphy of Cardinal Gibbons are next, and their school entered nobody anywhere. Aleah Sawyer (Gulliver Prep, Sr.) and Alafair Scelfo (Montverde, Fr.) are the same story.
Four who raced and landed just outside. Tessa Brown (Cardinal Newman, Jr.) ran 20:04 at Cecil, level to the tenth of a second with her state time, which for a junior in August is a real result. Malina Bunwat (Angeline Academy, Fr.) was fourth at Ragin' Storm after running 19:53.1 at state as an eighth grader. Madison Easton (Oasis, Jr.) was second at the Lehigh Invite behind 1A's Joanie Webb. Lauren Murphy (Trinity Catholic, Jr.) was fifth at Lecanto, the one 2A name touched by the one course this week we could not pin down.
One new name. Maya Kovalcik (Fernandina Beach, So.) won the Cecil Field Girls B race in 20:12.0 with no state history at all, in her first appearance anywhere in our data.
And the hardest omission, which is really three of them. Kavya Patel (Bolles, Sr.) was ninth in 2A at state in 18:59.9, the fourth-fastest returning mark in the class and the only sub-19 returner besides Vignier and Brice. She ran 20:30 at Cecil, 90 seconds off. Her teammates Palmer Edwards (Sr.) ran 20:31 and Peyton Hoover (Jr.) ran 21:31. All three are top twenty returning marks in 2A. All three finished more than a minute below them, in the same race where Sofie Stam beat her projection.
That is not one bad day, it is three, and it is why Bolles is the best 2A team that raced and still only sixteenth in Florida. The same split shows up almost exactly in the Bolles boys' race. Patel is far too good to write off, and she has no case to be ranked on a time she had the chance to defend and did not. She is not on this list. She should be on the next one.
How we ranked them
- Courses do not all run the same speed, so we do not compare raw times. Cecil Field is the yardstick, since most of the state's best runners were there. For the other meets we look at girls who raced both that course and last year's state meet and use the gap to work out what a time was worth.
- The girls' fields ran noticeably slower in August than they did at state in November, so an opener that looks like a step back usually is not one. That gap is built into every number here, and it is why Selah Vignier's 40 seconds is not a red flag.
- Girls who have not opened are ranked on last November and marked (P). It gives them no credit for the summer, and it still leaves seven of these ten unraced.
- Cecil Field, Ragin' Storm and Lehigh all check out cleanly. Lecanto is the one we could not pin down, and it touches exactly one 2A name, Lauren Murphy, who is in the just missed section either way.
- 344 Class 2A girls have a mark on the board, either an opener or a state time. 167 of them ran the state meet last fall.
- Class is the 2026-27 FHSAA classification. Every 2A school named here held the same class last season.
- We checked the fast August runners from schools with no class listed. One needs following up before week 2: Arliss Vargas of Candlelight Christian Academy, who ran quick enough at Jim Ryun to matter if her school turns out to be 2A.

Every opening-weekend time from August 21-22, 2026 is converted to a Cecil Field equivalent using the runners who raced both a given course and the 2025 FHSAA state meet. Runners who did not open are entered at their 2025 state time plus 28.8 seconds and marked (P). Schools are slotted into their 2026-27 FHSAA classification, not their 2025-26 one.

The 173 girls who ran both Cecil Field in August and the 2025 state meet averaged 28.8 seconds slower in August. Adding that gap to a state time puts an unraced runner on the same scale as everybody who actually opened. It credits her with no summer improvement at all, which is deliberately unkind, because runners who raced are stuck with exactly what they ran.
