Thirteen seconds slower than her November time in a month where the field average is 28.8 seconds slower is a quietly good opener — about a 16-second real improvement — and it is the only mark in this list that was measured directly against Duffell.
She lost that race by 20 seconds. She is a sophomore who has already been state runner-up, and Bartram Trail ranks 20th as a team with a 3:57 spread, so her season is an individual one. Third place in 4A is available to whoever wants it between her, Muller and whoever else breaks through by October.

Runner-up at state in 18:00.3 as a freshman, runner-up at Cecil Field in 18:13 as a sophomore, and runner-up at this same meet the year before that. Hartley went to the front and held a real gap through halfway before the heat and Duffell caught her. Thirteen seconds off her state time in those conditions is a fine August, and she has the best raw résumé of anyone in Florida who is not a state champion.
