Florida Class 1A boys cross country through three weeks: August 21-September 5, 2026
The state runner-up has not raced in two weeks, and the class has moved without him. Dominic Ferguson of Rocky Bayou Christian ran 16:28.3 for second at the Pace Patriot Invitational on Saturday, behind only Niceville's Bryant Olson on one of the slowest courses in the panhandle, and that one run is worth more than anything else in 1A this fall. Elijah Arterburn won the Dr. Garcia Bulldog Invite out of 232 for his third good race in three weeks. Sean Cunningham, first here since August, is now third on a race that is fifteen days old.
Starting this week a runner is ranked on his whole season, with the most recent race counting most, and a race he wins never counts against him. As always, this is data plus judgment, and we will miss somebody along the way. A (P) next to a name means that runner has not opened yet and we are going on last November. How we sorted everybody out is at the bottom. Races are not won until the kids have run. Enjoy.

1. Dominic Ferguson, Rocky Bayou Christian, Sr.
Second at the Pace Patriot Invitational out of 165 in 16:28.3, 20 seconds behind Olson and 17 clear of everybody else, on a course that gives nothing away. On neutral ground that is worth about 15:49, the best mark in the class by twenty seconds. He was 14th in 1A at state in 16:31.0. One race, and it was a big one.
2. Elijah Arterburn, Atlantic Christian, Sr.
Three races, and the most consistent boy in the class: 16:19.0 at Cecil Field, 16:16.9 for second at the Pine Crest meet out of 406, and a win at the Dr. Garcia Bulldog Invite out of 232 in 16:23.9. The Dr. Garcia course is one we price carefully; on the generous reading of it he would be top ten in Florida, and on the reading we trust he is a 16:10 runner over the season. He was 73rd in 1A at state in 18:06.2. He is not that runner anymore.
3. Sean Cunningham, Providence, Sr.
The 1A state runner-up at 15:47.8, the fastest returning mark in the class, and still sitting on the 16:23.0 he ran at Cecil Field on opening night. He has not raced since. Two weeks ago that was enough for first. Now two boys have raced past it, and Cunningham needs a start line.
4. David Barton, Maclay, Sr.
Fifth in 1A at state in 16:07.2, 16:15.0 at Cecil Field, and 16:21.1 at the Horse Park on Saturday. Two races on honest courses, six seconds apart, and no drama. He is the steadiest thing in the top five.
5. Lucian Burns, Marathon, So.
Sixth at Pine Crest in 16:37.1, then won the FNU Invitational on Thursday in 17:10.4 on a slow course, by 48 seconds. A sophomore who was 17:36 at state has taken a minute off in ten months and is the best runner in the Keys by a distance.
6. Eli Domico, Indian Rocks Christian, So.
Fifth at the IMGA Summit Challenge in 16:11.2, the fastest raw time by a 1A boy this season, and the first non-IMG runner across the line there. The course runs a touch quick. His Cecil Field opener was 17:04.0, so the season figure lands sixth, and the trend is the point.
7. Jack Kline, Cornerstone Classical Academy, Jr.
Ninth in 1A at state in 16:22.1, 16:33.0 at Cecil Field and 16:23.7 at the Horse Park. Same pattern as Barton one place up: two fair courses, a little better the second time.
8. Benjamin Francis, Highlands Christian, Sr.
Fifth at Pine Crest in 16:36.2 and fourth at Dr. Garcia in 16:53.4, both behind Arterburn. He was 15th in 1A at state in 16:35.9.
9. Matteo Kirwan, Circle Christian, So.
16:34.0 at Cecil Field on opening night, and nothing since. He was 60th in 1A at state in 17:56.6. That is more than eighty seconds of improvement over the summer, and he holds ninth on it.
10. Lukas Arrojo, True North, So.
Won the Palmer Trinity Invitational by a full minute in 19:09.5, on the slowest course in Florida by a wide margin. On the conversion we carry that is worth about 16:33, which would put him seventh. He is held tenth, behind three boys who ran their times at Cecil Field with no conversion at all, because a rating that large deserves a seatbelt. One race anywhere else settles it.
Just missed
John Curley (St. Edward's, Sr.) is first out on his 17:14.0 at the Indian River Fairgrounds. Broderick Olson (Cornerstone Classical Academy, Sr.) ran 16:36.0 at Cecil and 16:45.4 at the Horse Park. Isaiah Manderson (Pensacola Christian, Sr.), sixth on the returner list at 16:37.6, ran 16:28.4 at the Horse Park, a big step up from his 17:34.7 at Pine Forest a week earlier, and is thirteenth on the two together. James Roland (Harvest Community, Sr.) ran 17:03.0 at Cecil.
Ryder Dempsey of Geneva Classical Academy would be top five in this class on his 16:30.3 at Lake Region. Geneva Classical competes as an FHSAA Independent this year and belongs to no class, so he is named and not ranked.
How we ranked them
- Courses do not all run the same speed, so we do not compare raw times. Cecil Field is the yardstick; for other meets we use runners who raced both that course and last year's state meet to work out what a time was worth.
- A runner is ranked on his whole season, weighted toward the most recent race: this week counts three times, last week twice, opening weekend once. A race he won is never allowed to lower that figure.
- Runners who have not opened are ranked on last November and marked (P). Nobody in this ten needed one.
- Palmer Trinity carries the largest conversion of any course we rate, and Arrojo is held below the Cecil Field marks on purpose.
- Grades and classes are 2026-27, resolved against the FHSAA classification documents.
