The largest improvement by any 1A girl who opened. Akhundjanov was 28th in 1A at state in 20:18.6 as a freshman, our 21st-ranked returner in the class, and she ran 19:43 at Cecil for 29th in the Elite race, seven seconds behind Richardson. In November terms that is roughly 19:14 — a 64-second jump.
One race is one race, and Cecil in August rewards runners who trained through the summer more than it rewards runners who peaked in November. But the mark is real and it came in the hardest race available. Providence ranks seventh in 1A behind it.
