Best Time of Year for a South Florida 5K

October through March is the best window. Mornings are milder, humidity drops from its summer peak, and most of the area's races are scheduled in these months. Summer 5Ks exist, but heat and afternoon storms make them a different experience.

• Start early. Most South Florida 5Ks start at sunrise or soon after. Heat builds quickly once the sun is up, so an early start is a real advantage.
• Hydrate before and after. Humidity slows sweat evaporation, so you may feel fine while losing a lot of fluid. Drink steadily the day before and again after you finish.
• Expect rain. Showers can pass through quickly in any season. Most races go on in light rain, so bring a change of dry clothes and check the race page for weather policies.

Choosing a 5K in South Florida

South Florida adds a few things to think about on top of the basics:

• Heat and humidity. Favor races that start at or near sunrise, and treat any 5K outside October through March as a heat-management event.
