When does SunSky 10K registration open?

Registration for the 2027 SunSky 10K opens Monday, October 5, 2026 at 12:00 a.m. Eastern on RunSignUp. General admission is $100 and charity bibs are $300. The race is limited to 8,000 runners and walkers, and organizers expect general admission to sell out quickly.

The race

The course is 6.2 miles on the northbound lanes of I-275, straight up and over the Skyway. At the top you are about 200 feet above Tampa Bay, and the race is timed so you get the sun coming up over the water on the way across. It is the only time the public is allowed to run the bridge.

  • Date: Sunday, March 21, 2027
  • Start: 5:00 a.m. on the RunSignUp listing. The northbound lanes close from 3:30 to 11 a.m.
  • Distance: 10K, run or walk
  • Ages: 12 and up
  • Field: 8,000 total
  • Packet pickup: Saturday, March 20, at a pickup party at Tropicana Field
  • Post-race party: Tropicana Field, with the Tampa Bay Rays

There is no parking at the bridge. Every participant rides a bus to the start and back from the finish. Organizers contract school district buses for that, so plan on an early wake-up and a ride, not a drive to the line.

How much does the SunSky 10K cost?

General admission is $100. Charity bibs are $300 and are the other way in once general entries are gone. Proceeds go to six military and first responder nonprofits:

  • American Association of State Troopers
  • Association of the U.S. Army, Suncoast Chapter
  • Coast Guard Foundation
  • Suncoast Police Benevolent Association
  • Tampa Police Benevolent Association
  • Semper Fi & America's Fund

One practical note: as of October 4, RunSignUp shows a notice on the race page that it cannot process American Express cards. Have a Visa or Mastercard ready at midnight so a declined card does not cost you a spot.

Is this the old Skyway 10K?

Close to it. The name is new, but the people are not. Race director Jonathan Dziuba and FRESHJUNKIE Racing produced the Skyway 10K, the first event to open the bridge to runners and walkers since it opened in 1987, and several of its original organizers are back. The race has been in the works for more than a year and is planned as an annual event.

Expect the same feel: a heavy focus on honoring people who serve and have served, and a field from all over. Past bridge runs drew participants from all 50 states and several countries.

"This is the only time the public can run across the bridge," Dziuba said. "That, mixed with watching the sunrise across Tampa Bay from this iconic bridge, makes it a bucket-list race."

How hard is the Skyway climb?

It is the closest thing to a mountain on a Florida road race. You climb about 200 feet to the top of the span, then give it back on the way down. That is not much by hill-country standards, but it comes as one long, steady grade, and most Florida runners never train on anything like it.

  • Train for it: parking garages and causeway bridges are the best stand-ins. The Courtney Campbell Causeway trail bridge and downtown garage ramps are good for repeats. Our best places to run in St. Petersburg has more ideas.
  • Pace the climb by effort: let the watch slow down on the way up. The time you lose is small, and you get it back on the descent.
  • Decide on the view: the view at the top is the reason most people sign up. Decide before the start whether this is a race or a sightseeing run.

If March is your first 10K, you have plenty of time. Twenty-four weeks from now is race day.
