Traz Powell Stadium (MDC North, Miami): Track Venue Guide

If your meet schedule says "Traz Powell," you are headed to the home stadium of seven Miami-Dade high school football teams. Football fills it in the fall. From January to May it is a track venue, with middle school championships in the winter, the Louie Bing Invitational in February, the Greater Miami Athletic Conference (GMAC) meets in March and April, and FHSAA district meets at the end of the season. Here is what to know before you go.

Where Is Traz Powell Stadium?

The stadium is at 11380 NW 27th Ave., Miami, FL 33167, on the Miami Dade College North Campus in the Westview area of northwest Miami-Dade. The entrance is off NW 27th Avenue. Its full name is Nathaniel "Traz" Powell Stadium, and you will also see it listed as Traz Powell Stadium - MDC North or, since 2025, adidas Field at Traz Powell Stadium.

• Parking: the stadium's rental listing includes on-site parking. Big meets and Friday night football fill it, so plan to arrive 30 to 60 minutes early.
• Admission: each meet sets its own gate. Check the meet information page for the meet you are going to.

The Track and the Stadium

Traz Powell has an eight-lane, 400-meter track around a turf football field. Both were replaced in a $2 million, nine-month renovation that reopened the stadium in January 2020. Nike paid for it with the Miami Dolphins as a Super Bowl LIV legacy project for Miami-Dade County Public Schools. The new track and field surface were made with 282,000 pounds of recycled athletic shoes, and the project also added new locker rooms, lighting, a press box and a scoreboard.

The stadium has home and visitor grandstands, lights for night events, and a sound system. Meets at Traz Powell contest the full high school program, from the 100 and the hurdles to the 3200, plus all four relays and the sprint medley, the high jump, pole vault, long and triple jump, shot put, discus and javelin.

In August 2025 Miami-Dade County Public Schools signed a five-year, $13.5 million partnership with adidas, launched at the stadium, and the field was renamed adidas Field at Traz Powell Stadium. The stadium's name did not change, and the end zones still read "Traz" and "Powell."

Who Was Traz Powell?

The stadium opened in the 1960s as Miami-Dade Junior College's stadium and was renamed in 1988 for Nathaniel "Traz" Powell. Powell grew up in Overtown and starred at Booker T. Washington in the 1940s. In 1947, playing for Florida A&M, he became the first Black player to score a touchdown in the Orange Bowl. As a high school football coach he went 167-37-3 over 21 years, with five undefeated state championships at George Washington Carver High School and another state title at Mays in 1966. He died in 1980.

Miami Northwestern, Booker T. Washington and Miami Central are among the schools that play home football games here. A 2023 documentary about the stadium is called The Mecca of High School Football.

Is There a Cross Country Course at Traz Powell?

No. Traz Powell is a track and football stadium, and no cross country meets are listed there. Miami-Dade cross country meets are held at parks and school campuses instead; you can find them all in our Florida cross country results. For a full cross country venue guide, see the Florida Horse Park.

Track Meets at Traz Powell Stadium

The calendar here is steady from year to year. Based on the meets held from 2022 to 2026:

• January to early February: middle school. The Northwestern MS Invitational, the Dade County Youth Fair MS Championship and the Miami-Dade MS / K-8 Championship and its qualifier.
• Mid-February: Louie Bing Invitational. A two-day high school invitational hosted by Miami Northwestern that draws teams from Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties and beyond.
• Early March: GMAC Invitational.
• April: GMAC Championship (with a qualifier in some years) for the Miami-Dade public schools, plus Special Olympics meets.
• Late April to early May: FHSAA district meets, and in 2022 and 2023 an FHSAA regional.
• June: Miami Northwest Express Classic, a summer meet that held its 48th edition here in 2024.

The 2026 season is in the table below. The 2026 GMAC Championship, scheduled for April 8, was cancelled.

2026 Louie Bing Invitational Winners

The Louie Bing Invitational is the biggest invitational of the year at Traz Powell. It ran Feb. 13-14, 2026. Columbus won the boys team title with 76 points, one point ahead of Dillard (75), with Flanagan third at 67. Dillard won the girls title with 140 points, ahead of St. Thomas Aquinas (112) and host Miami Northwestern (90). Traz Powell Stadium Records

Neither Miami-Dade County Public Schools nor Miami Dade College publishes an official list of stadium records, and MileSplit's venue record lists are not shown on its open venue page. Until an official list exists, the Louie Bing winning marks above are the best public benchmark for what it takes to win at Traz Powell. Braylen Bennett's 10.58 in the 100 and Zamarii Sanders' 20.83 in the 200 set the sprint standard in 2026, and Dillard's 3:16.84 won the boys 4x400.

Tips for Athletes and Spectators

• Heat and sun: Miami track season runs into May, and afternoon sessions can be hot. Bring water, sunscreen and a hat, and a pop-up tent if your team has one.
• Arrive early: parking fills for the big invitationals, so give yourself 30 to 60 minutes.
• Long days: the Louie Bing runs over two days and the GMAC meets are full-day meets. Check the schedule for your event and pack food.
• Results: Traz Powell meets post results on TFRRS and MileSplit; the Louie Bing link is in the meet table above.
