Boys 1A Individual Rankings — Week 1

Runner-up in 1A at state in 15:47.8 — the fastest returning mark in the class by more than nineteen seconds, and the only sub-16:00 any returning 1A boy owns. He opened at Cecil Field in 16:23 for 34th in the Boys Elite race, which is eight seconds behind David Barton and 35 seconds off his own November time.

He is ranked first anyway, and the reason is what the race looked like: Cunningham went out with Armando Cruz, the fastest boy in Florida, and paid for it over the last mile. That is a choice, not a decline, and the boys' zero-second August conversion means his 15:47.8 needs no discounting to still be the best number in this class. He gets one race of benefit of the doubt. He does not get two.

Fifth in 1A at state in 16:07.2 and 24th at Cecil Field in 16:15, which is eight seconds up on Cunningham on the same course in the same conditions, and within eight seconds of his own state time on a day the average returner ran level.

Barton is the most consistent runner in the class and the argument for him at first is a real one — he beat the man ranked above him. He is second because 15:47.8 is nineteen seconds faster than anything he has run and because one head-to-head in August is thinner evidence than a season. Maclay ranks second in 1A as a team behind him.

The largest single improvement by any 1A runner in Florida, boys or girls. Arterburn was 73rd in 1A at state in 18:06.2 and our 39th-ranked returner in the class. He ran 16:19 at Cecil Field for 26th in the Elite race, in the same second as Cooper Thomas and Reed Hagen and three seconds ahead of Belen Jesuit's second man.

That is 107.8 seconds off, on the course that sets the baseline, with no course correction to argue about. Nothing in the data suggests an error — one Arterburn, one school, a senior year, no transfer. What the data cannot tell us is whether it repeats. He is third because the mark says third and one race says be careful.

Ninth in 1A at state in 16:22.1, third-fastest returning mark in the class, and 46th at Cecil in 16:33 — ten seconds off, which is a normal opener for a runner in shape. No drama in either direction.

Kline is a junior on the third-ranked 1A team, and the interesting thing about Cornerstone is that he is no longer clearly their best runner.

Second-biggest move in the class. Kirwan was 60th in 1A at state in 17:56.6 as a freshman and ran 16:34 at Cecil, 50th in the Elite race and one second behind Kline. That is 83 seconds off, as a sophomore, on the honest course.

Circle Christian ranks fifth in 1A on the strength of him and Aschalew Parker. He is the youngest runner in this top ten by two years.

The other half of the Cornerstone problem. Olson was 55th in 1A at state in 17:51.7 and ran 16:36 at Cecil, three seconds behind his own teammate Kline and 76 seconds better than his November mark. Cornerstone now has two runners inside the top seven of this class, which is why they rank third as a team with a 2:19 spread and no third man under 17:50.

Fourteenth in 1A at state in 16:31.0, the fourth-fastest returning mark in the class, and he did not open. On the boys' side that projection is nearly free — no 28-second tax, just the same time carried forward — so 16:31.0 slots him seventh on raw merit against runners who have already improved on their November marks.

Rocky Bayou projects twelfth in 1A with a 5:29 spread, so he is running alone and has been for a while.

Fifteenth in 1A at state in 16:35.9 and no opener. Same note as Ferguson: the mark is good, the evidence is nine months old, and five boys have already run faster than it this month.

Sixteenth in 1A at state in 16:37.6, and the number one man on the team that projects first in Class 1A — Pensacola Christian's returning five average 17:20.9 inside a 1:15.8 spread, the tightest projected group in the class by a wide margin. None of them raced.

Manderson is the runner on this list whose ranking is most likely to move in either direction, because the team around him is good enough that he will get a real race every week once they start entering meets.

The best 1A performance nobody watched. Roland ran 17:03 at Cecil Field — in the Boys B race, where he finished fourth — after placing 51st in 1A at state in 17:48.3. That is a 45.9-second improvement, and it is identical to the time that Carson Ohman of Pensacola Christian is projected at without having raced.

He gets the tenth spot over Ohman on the tiebreak this whole method is built around: he ran it this year, in the heat, and Ohman has not.
