Ranking writeups
#5 — 4A Boys Week 1
The largest projected improvement in the class and the one most worth arguing about. Pipia was 77th in 4A at state in 17:09.8 and finished second at Jim Ryun in 16:17.5, which converts to 15:39.3 — a 90-second jump in nine months.
Ninety seconds is a lot to accept on one race and one conversion. The conversion itself is not the weak point; Jim Ryun's offset is built on 40 runners and it is the second-best-supported figure in the whole method. The weak point is that Pipia's only evidence is a race he lost by 23 seconds to a runner with no history either. He is ranked fifth because the number says fifth and there is no principled reason to discount it. Plant does not rank as a team.
