Eighth, where she was: Hartley beat her at Cecil Field and holds seventh on that result, and she beat Austin, Cerasi, Delaney and Godfrey in the same race. She and Lewis have not met, and her figure is better by more than 20 seconds.

Her 18:50.0 at Cecil, against the 20:04.1 she ran at state as a freshman, remains the largest improvement by any girl in the state, and it survived a second week of the whole state racing without anyone matching it. She has not raced since, and the sophomore class in 4A, Brown, Hartley, Delaney, is quietly the scariest age group in Florida.

The biggest jump by any 4A girl who actually ran. Brown was 51st in 4A at state in 20:04.1 as a freshman and finished seventh in the Cecil Field Elite race in 18:50 — a 74-second improvement, in the hardest field available, ahead of two girls ranked above her here in November.
