Everything you need to know about running at Disney World — the Marathon Weekend, Princess Half Marathon, Wine & Dine Half, Springtime Surprise, and more. Dates, distances, course highlights, and registration tips.
Running Through the Magic Kingdom
Walt Disney World hosts some of the most unique races in the country — events where you run through Epcot's World Showcase at midnight, past Cinderella Castle at sunrise, and get cheered on by costumed characters at every mile marker. RunDisney events sell out fast, attract tens of thousands of runners, and are unlike any other race on the calendar.
If you're a Florida runner, the Disney World campus in Lake Buena Vista is in your backyard. This guide covers every RunDisney event, the race distances, when registration opens, and how to prepare for running 26.2 miles through a theme park.
RunDisney Events at Walt Disney World
Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend (January)
The biggest RunDisney event of the year and one of the most iconic marathons in the United States. Marathon Weekend is held in early January and offers four race distances across four days.
- 5K — Thursday evening
- 10K — Friday morning
- Half Marathon — Saturday morning (13.1 miles)
- Full Marathon — Sunday morning (26.2 miles)
- Goofy's Race & a Half Challenge — Run the Half + Full on back-to-back days
- Dopey Challenge — Run all four distances across all four days (48.6 miles total)
The marathon course runs through Magic Kingdom, EPCOT, Hollywood Studios, and Animal Kingdom — the only chance most runners ever get to run inside all four parks. Corrals are assigned based on a proof of time you submit at registration.
Disney Princess Half Marathon Weekend (February/March)
Held at EPCOT and Magic Kingdom, the Princess Half Marathon is one of the most popular half marathons in the country. The event has a strong female-dominated field and a festive atmosphere — expect thousands of runners in princess costumes.
- Enchanted 10K — Saturday morning
- Princess Half Marathon — Sunday morning (13.1 miles)
- Glass Slipper Challenge — Run the 10K + Half on back-to-back days
The course runs through EPCOT and Magic Kingdom with a pre-dawn start. Character photo stops are available along the route, though stopping will add significant time to your finish.
Disney Springtime Surprise Weekend (April)
A newer addition to the RunDisney calendar, Springtime Surprise Weekend features a 5K, 10K, Half Marathon, and the Springtime Challenge (10K + Half). Held at EPCOT and Hollywood Studios.
Disney Wine & Dine Half Marathon Weekend (November)
Wine & Dine is the only RunDisney event with a late-night race — the Half Marathon starts after 10pm and finishes in EPCOT during the Food & Wine Festival. If you're going to run a half marathon in the dark through a theme park, this is it.
- 5K — Friday evening
- 10K — Saturday evening
- Half Marathon — Saturday night/Sunday early morning
- Two Course Challenge — 10K + Half Marathon
Disney World Marathon Course Overview
The Disney World Marathon route changes slightly year to year, but the general layout covers all four theme parks:
- Start near EPCOT, run through the park's back areas
- Loop through Hollywood Studios and Animal Kingdom
- Run along World Drive toward Magic Kingdom
- Enter Magic Kingdom, run down Main Street U.S.A. and through Fantasyland
- Exit through the Transportation & Ticket Center and finish near EPCOT
Total elevation change is minimal — this is a flat course, which is good news for first-time marathoners chasing a PR or Dopey finishers who've already run 36 miles in the previous three days.
Time Limits at RunDisney Events
RunDisney enforces strict time limits at all events. Runners who fall behind the pace sweepers are removed from the course and bused to the finish. The standard pace requirement across all RunDisney distances is 16:00 per mile (a 3:30 half marathon or 7:00 marathon finish).
If you're planning to run a RunDisney event, make sure you can comfortably complete your distance within the time cutoff — including character stops. Our half marathon pace chart can help you understand what pace you need to hit.
How to Register for RunDisney Races
RunDisney race registration opens on specific dates and sells out within hours for popular events like the Dopey Challenge and Princess Half. The process:
- Create a RunDisney account at rundisney.com
- Watch for registration date announcements (usually 6–9 months before the event)
- Be ready at the exact opening time — use a laptop, not a phone
- Have your credit card ready and proof of time (for corral placement) available
Annual Passholders and Disney Vacation Club members often get early registration access.
How to Prepare for a Disney Race
Running through a theme park is fun, but it's still a race. A few things that make Disney events different from regular road races:
- Early start times. Most Disney races start between 5:30am and 5:45am. You'll be at the corrals by 4:30am. Plan accordingly.
- Character stops. Lines for popular characters can be 5–10 minutes each. Build this into your time estimate if you plan to stop.
- Crowds in corrals. Major Disney events have 20,000+ runners. Corral seeding matters — submit a proof of time to avoid being stuck in the back.
- Heat in later corrals. By the time the last corrals start, Florida sun may already be up. For summer events or late-starting corrals, sun protection matters.
