She is tenth because three girls who were above her a week ago ran slower in Huntsville, not because of anything she did.

18:32.9 at Lecanto on opening weekend and 18:39.3 at Whispering Pines a week later, two races on two courses that agree, and a 3A-calibre state time of 18:27.9 from November, third in 1A. She did not race in week three and dropped out of the statewide ten for it. In her own class she still holds first, by six seconds, over a girl who has raced three times.

Two things happened to Summers this week and only one of them was a race. The race: she got her first real field at the Whispering Pines Invitational and finished fourth in 18:39.3, behind three of the best girls in Florida. The other thing: the Lecanto course rating that priced her opener at 18:06 was corrected, and her win there is now worth about 18:29. On the statewide list, that dropped her from fourth to tenth.

Here, it changes nothing. She is still the best small-school runner in Florida by half a minute, 18:29 followed by 18:44 in eight days is a normal August for a sophomore, and no other 1A girl has come within half a minute of her best mark. Summers won at Lecanto in 18:32.9, worth 18:29.3 at the corrected offset rather than the 18:06 we published a week ago. Then she got a real race for the first time and finished fourth at Whispering Pines in 18:39.3, behind Gaona-Zelaya, Hallick and Vincent, worth 18:44.5.

That is not a collapse — it is 18:29 followed by 18:44 in eight days, which is a normal August for a sophomore. It is a demotion from a ranking built on a course rating that has since been shown to be wrong, and she is the clearest case on this page of a number changing without a runner doing anything.

Third in 1A at state as a freshman in 18:27.9, the fastest returning 1A mark in Florida by nineteen seconds, and she opened by winning the Lecanto Invitational in 18:32.9. Even on the most conservative reading of that course, it is the fastest 1A time of the weekend by roughly a minute, and it belongs in the conversation with the best girls in the state regardless of class — she was seventh in our overall Florida top ten.

She ran it alone, which is the permanent condition of being Mary Summers. Lydia Vincent of Zephyrhills was eight seconds back and is the only girl who has made her work since November. Seven Rivers does not rank as a team in 1A. Nobody in this class is going to force a race out of her before the regional meet, and possibly not then.

Summers won at Lecanto in 18:32.9, on a course that graded within three seconds of Cecil, which makes it the third-fastest legitimate time in the state this weekend. She ran it essentially alone. The only knock is that she has not yet had to race anyone, and that will not change often in 1A.
