The Gate River Run is Jacksonville's most iconic road race — a 15K that ends with the legendary Hart Bridge climb and draws thousands of runners to the streets of downtown every spring. Here is everything you need to know.

The Gate River Run is the most iconic road race in Jacksonville — and one of the most celebrated 15Ks in the United States. Every spring, thousands of runners from across Florida and beyond gather on the streets of Jacksonville to take on a course that has become synonymous with the city's running culture. Whether you are a Jacksonville local who has run it a dozen times or a first-timer eyeing the famous Hart Bridge climb, here is everything you need to know.

What Is the Gate River Run?

The Gate River Run is a 15K (9.3 mile) road race held annually in Jacksonville, Florida, each March. It is consistently ranked among the largest 15Ks in the country and draws an elite field alongside thousands of recreational runners. The race is organized by First Place Sports — Jacksonville's beloved local running store — and is sponsored by Gate Petroleum. For decades it has served as the crown jewel of the Jacksonville race calendar and has been designated a USA Track & Field Championship event multiple times.

The Course: Hart Bridge and Beyond

The course begins in downtown Jacksonville and winds through some of the city's most recognizable streets before delivering runners to the moment everyone is either dreading or craving: the Hart Bridge climb.

The Hart Bridge is a soaring 140-foot structure over the St. Johns River. Runners ascend at a 6% grade, legs burning by mile 8, before cresting the top and flying down the other side toward the finish. The views of the Jacksonville skyline and the river from the top are a reward in themselves. The flat, fast miles before and after the bridge make the Gate River Run an excellent PR target for runners chasing a 15K personal best.

The course is USATF-certified. The finish line drops runners on the south bank of the St. Johns River, where a post-race festival keeps the energy going long after the last finisher crosses.

Race History

The Gate River Run has been a Jacksonville institution for over four decades. What began as a local road race has grown into one of the Southeast's premier running events, attracting elite runners from across the country and internationally competitive fields. The race has served as the US 15K Road Championship multiple times, cementing its reputation as one of the most prestigious road races in America outside of the major marathons.

How to Register

Registration typically opens in the fall and sells out well before race day. Early registration is strongly recommended. Check the Gate River Run event page on Run Florida Run for the latest registration details, course map, and race day information.

Training for the Gate River Run

The 15K distance sits between a 10K and a half marathon, making it an excellent stepping stone for runners building toward longer races. If you can comfortably run a 10K, you have a solid base for Gate River Run preparation. A 10–12 week plan that includes a weekly long run, tempo work, and at least one bridge-simulation hill effort will prepare you well for the Hart Bridge climb.

Jacksonville Running Club and First Place Sports both offer training groups and local resources for runners preparing for the race. The running community around the Gate River Run is one of the most active and welcoming in Northeast Florida.

Race Day Tips

  • Arrive early. Downtown Jacksonville fills up fast on race morning. Plan your parking well in advance.
  • Simulate the bridge. If you can, incorporate bridge running into your training. The Hart Bridge grade will feel familiar on race day.
  • Start conservatively. The first eight miles are flat and fast — it is easy to go out too hard. Save something for the climb.
  • Dress for Florida spring. March morning temperatures in Jacksonville typically sit in the 50s at the start and warm quickly. Light, moisture-wicking layers work best.
  • Stay for the festival. Beer, food, and live energy at the post-race celebration make it worth sticking around.
