Boys Overall Individual Rankings — Week 2

#1 Marcelo Mantecon — Belen Jesuit (Miami) (2027)

Nine days on, and still nothing. Mantecon has not pinned on a number, and the rule has not changed: a defending state champion holds the top spot until somebody beats him in a race. He won the 3A title in 15:03.3, the fastest returning time in Florida, was fourth at Nike Cross Nationals as a Southeast at-large individual and runner-up at the Brooks national championship, and won eight of eleven races as a junior. Belen Jesuit is entered at the Florida Horse Park next Saturday. That is the first real chance anyone gets.

#2 Armando Cruz — Belen Jesuit (Miami) (2027)

Also idle in week two, and still the owner of the fastest time any Florida boy has actually run this season: 15:06.0, winning the Cecil Field elite race out of 354 starters, six seconds quicker than the 15:12.7 he ran at state. Nothing in eighteen meets came near it. The next-fastest time any Florida boy has run this season is ten seconds slower.

#3 Quentin Thompson — Lake Minneola (2027)

Held at three on one race, which is all he has run. His 15:16.0 for second at Cecil is a 1:13.6 improvement on the 16:29.6 he ran at state, where he was 32nd in 4A and our 47th-ranked returner. Lake Minneola is entered at the Horse Park, so the second data point is coming.

#4 Jaxon Kiper — Strawberry Crest (2027)

He ran on Saturday, he ran 18:06.2, and he stays fourth.

Here is what happened. Kiper finished fifth at the Central Hillsborough Championships in 18:06.2. Sixth, in 18:06.2, was his teammate Elijah Swanson, whose time at the Jim Ryun Invitational eight days earlier was 20:43.9. Kiper took a 20:43 runner to 18:06 and crossed the line with him. Meanwhile Strawberry Crest's James Nolan, who did not race at all in week one, won the thing in 16:33.7, by 1:15.9. That is not a bad day from Kiper. That is a pacing job, and it worked on more than Swanson: Parke Schiebel went 19:39.9 to 18:47.8 in the same eight days.

It would not have changed the ranking either way, because Central Hillsborough is one of the six courses we cannot rate — exactly one runner in that field also ran the 2025 state meet. The number that ranks him is still the Jim Ryun win, 15:54.3 out of 276 varsity runners, which converts to 15:16.1 on the Holloway offset. He remains a runner with one converted mark and no head-to-head against anybody ahead of him, and Strawberry Crest is not entered at the Horse Park.

#5 Isaiah Howdeshell — Largo (2027)

Third at Cecil in 15:20.0, 41.2 seconds up on his 16:01.2 at state, and he did not race again. The reclassification is still the story underneath the time: Largo drops from 4A to 3A, which puts him in a postseason bracket with both Belen Jesuit runners.

#6 Axel Sallault — East Ridge (Clermont) (2027)

The most quietly persuasive week two anybody had. Sallault ran 15:47.0 at Cecil Field for eighth on August 21. On August 29 he won the Whispering Pines Invitational out of 174 varsity runners in 15:47.0. The same time, to the tenth, on two different courses eight days apart.

Whispering Pines grades roughly fourteen seconds slow, which prices the second run at 15:32.8 and moves him past Seth. Take the course at its median (+4.1) instead and the second run is worth 15:42.9 and he sits eleventh. We are ranking him sixth on the combination of a win in a real field, a repeat performance, and the 15:27.5 he ran at state — the second-fastest returning time by any boy in Florida, and better than anything on this list outside Belen Jesuit. He is the runner whose ranking depends least on which offset you believe.

#7 Douglas Seth — Flagler Palm Coast (2029)

Unchanged and unraced since Spikes & Spurs, where he won out of 202 runners in 15:59.5 as a sophomore. It converts to 15:31.7 and it comes with the loudest warning on this board: the Spikes & Spurs offset rests on fourteen boys whose mean says +43.1 and whose median says +16.5. Published, we use +27.8. At the median he is worth about 15:43 and he is thirteenth. Flagler Palm Coast is entered at the Horse Park, which will help.

#8 Will Moss — Montverde Academy (2027)

Two weeks, no race. The 2A champion at 15:35.3 is now the longest-standing question on this list, and Montverde Academy is entered at the Horse Park next Saturday. He is ranked on last November because last November is all there is.

#9 Rishi Chopra — Nease (Ponte Vedra) (2027)

Fourth at Cecil in 15:39.0, a 37.7-second improvement on 16:16.7, and the only number in the bottom half of this top ten that needs no conversion at all. Teammate Matthew Ishee went 15:54.0 the same night. Chopra did not race in week two and did not need to; the three boys with converted marks inside four seconds of his have all had to be adjusted onto his course, and he has not.

#10 Luke Ross — Ponte Vedra (2027)

Second at Spikes & Spurs in 16:04.9, worth 15:37.1 adjusted, and did not run again. Same caveat as Seth: at the median reading of that course he is worth about 15:48, which is outside the top fifteen. Ponte Vedra is entered at the Horse Park.

Just missed

Antonino Pipia (Plant, Jr., 4A) is the first name out and the biggest mover nobody is talking about: 77th in 4A at state in 17:09.8, second at Jim Ryun in 16:17.5, worth 15:39.3. That is 52.3 seconds of raw improvement and our 134th-ranked returner in the top twelve of the state.

Gabriel Harris (Lake Wales, Sr., 3A) was third at Jim Ryun in 16:21.1, worth 15:42.9. Jonas Williams (Newsome, Sr., 4A) won the Lake Region / George Whitmire Invitational out of 175 runners in 16:16.5, worth 15:43.1 on a course rated by sixteen pairs; he was 43rd in 4A at state in 16:39.4. Bryant Olson (Niceville, So., 4A) ran 15:44.0 at Cecil and then won at Pine Forest on August 29 in 16:13.6, which converts to 16:02.7 — a normal week-two race, not a step forward.

Liam Ilea (Tavares, Jr., 3A) is the sharpest improvement curve on the board. He has no 2025 state mark. He ran 16:43.9 at Jim Ryun for seventh, then 16:00.6 at Whispering Pines for second behind Sallault eight days later. That is 43.3 raw seconds in a week, and it is the single strongest argument that the week-two drift is real fitness rather than generous course ratings. Skylar Manatt (Cypress Creek, Sr., 3A) did the same thing on the same two courses, 17:11.8 to 16:06.7, and is worth 15:52.6.

Jonathan Kiros (Chiles, Sr., 3A) and Jack Michalak (Belen Jesuit, Jr., 3A) both ran 15:47.0 at Cecil and neither raced again; they were ninth and just-missed a week ago and they have been passed by people who ran twice. Andrew Sides (Buchholz, Jr., 4A) ran 15:49.0. Luis Rivera (St. Cloud, Sr., 4A) won the Kowboy Invitational in 16:04.6 out of 147 after going 16:43.0 at Jim Ryun, and has no state mark at all.

Levi Mollica (Oviedo, Sr., 4A) is worth watching for the opposite reason. Our seventh-ranked returner at 15:59.9 ran 80th at Cecil in 17:02.0, which looked like a season ending before it started, and then won the Trinity Prep Invite out of 105 in 16:42.5. That converts to 16:00.5 — back to exactly where he was in November.

Dylan Macias-Buenrostro (Mariner, Sr., 3A) finally opened, winning the Cape Coral Seahawk Invite in 16:34.7. Converted, that is 16:10.5, seven seconds slower than the 16:03.6 he ran at state. He was our tenth-ranked returner and he stays out until the number moves. He appears in that result file as "Dylan Macias," which is why he read as a no-show until we swept for it.

James Nolan (Strawberry Crest, Sr., 4A) has to be named and cannot be ranked. His 16:33.7 win is the only race he has run, and it is on a course with no usable conversion. If Central Hillsborough is an honest 5K he is a top-fifteen boy in Florida. We have no way to check.

Sean Cunningham (Providence, Sr., 1A) is still sitting on a 16:23.0 from Cecil and a 15:47.8 from state, and has not raced since.

Who finally races next Saturday

The Florida Horse Park Invitational on September 5 has an entry list that reads like a repair kit for this ranking. Belen Jesuit is entered, which means Mantecon, Cruz, Michalak and Liam Salom in one race. Montverde Academy is entered, which means Will Moss. So are Lake Minneola (Thompson), Flagler Palm Coast (Seth), Ponte Vedra (Ross), Chiles (Kiros), Newsome (Jonas Williams), Tavares (Ilea) and Cypress Creek (Manatt).

That is one, two, three, seven, eight and ten on this list on the same start line, plus five of the eleven names in Just Missed. If Mantecon runs it, the top of this board is settled in about fifteen minutes.

What it will not settle: Kiper, Howdeshell, Sallault and Chopra are not on the entry list. Neither is Pipia. The two halves of this ranking are not scheduled to meet.

Method notes

  • Times are converted to Cecil Field equivalents using athletes who ran both the 2025 FHSAA state meet and the course in question, matched on name and school. Cecil Field is the zero point; the boys' field ran 0.6 seconds slower there in August than at state, against 28.8 for the girls.
  • Twenty-two of twenty-nine courses are rated for the boys. Unrated on fewer than four common runners: Graceville, Wildwood, Villages Buffalo, Jupiter, Yellow Jacket and the Central Hillsborough Championships. Unrated because the sample contradicts itself: the IRCS Challenge (n=8, mean +112.8, median +34.9). Marks run on those courses are reported raw and rank nobody.
  • Offsets from samples under fifteen now use the median, not the mean, and are discarded entirely when mean and median differ by more than 25 seconds. This is a change from week one. The week-one offsets already in print are left exactly as published.
  • The least reliable rating on this list is Spikes & Spurs (+27.8 from fourteen pairs, mean +43.1, median +16.5). It is load-bearing for Seth at seven and Ross at nine, and for nobody else in the top ten.
  • Whispering Pines is rated +14.1 for boys from 42 pairs (median +4.1). At the median, Sallault, Ilea and Manatt all drop about ten seconds and Sallault falls to about eleventh.
  • The week-one to week-two drift is +13.2 seconds (median, n=156, 102 of them faster). If that is course rating rather than fitness, every week-two mark on this page is worth about thirteen seconds less than shown, which costs Sallault six places, Jonas Williams nine, and Ilea nine.
  • Out-of-state entries are excluded. Georgia and Kentucky schools appeared at Kowboy (Allatoona, Walton, North Oldham) and are not scored.
  • Grades and classes are 2026-27. Schools missing from the returner files were resolved against the FHSAA classification documents, not guessed.
